I have a mild 350 street/strip engine that runs low 7s in the 1/8th on nitrous, using cast internals. I have a guy interested in a trade, he is wanting to trade me a 454 .30 over, he says the heads have been redone, 10.1 compression ratio, forged flat top pistons. The motor looks good on the outside and done right, I see no oil leaks or cracks anywhere, and it runs and sounds good. I know what I have in my engine. However, I dont know who did the work to his 454. I have a turbo that would melt my 350 cast pistons in a second, and the forged flat tops in his 454 should handle the boost well. But I dont know if it actually has forged pistons in it or not. Should I trade and take the chance of not knowing if it has cast or forged pistons and throw boost to it, or keep what I got and be happy with it?

Not much to go on here low 7s in the 1/8 that’s like running low 11s in the ¼ depending on how much spray that’s not bad
Not knowing anything about the 454 but if its capable of the same times it has more value

One thing for sure, if you decide to do it. PULL THE PAN AND INSPECT IT. You didn't mention if it was supposed to have good crank or rods but pulling the pan would help and you could also see the pistons. It is not as good as taking it apart but it is the least I would do.

He didnt say if it had forged crank or rods, just forged pistons and arp all around. Pretty sure I got to change oil pans anyway to make it fit in a g body car. How would I tell by looking at the underside of the piston if it is forged?

You know what jorden, you've been on here a few time,s mostly telling someone how to check compresion, and now you ask a totally different question. I get the feeling that you just need your ego scratched, you're not building anything, an you probably can't afford to. I've been on here a long time and you need to come back when you get your act together.

Check out my ad 1526368. Yeah I am a beginner jumpin into the racing game. I was just tellin how I was told to check compression ratio and what was printed in the books. Im no expert, thats right. I done everything to my car build wise. Nobody helped me. All info I researched or did it by trial and error. Made alot of mistakes on the way, but learned in doing so. Just trying to get some more info and knowledge before I get in to deep.

Ok, let me get this straight, dude wants to trade you his built 454 for your virtually stock OEM cast bottom end 350 that you've shot the hell out with NOS? I would have already done it> what you waiting on?

Only reason I havent done it yet is because I am scared that he might be lying to get me to go through with the deal, and that it would have cast pistons in it and when I throw boost to it that it would turn into 454 cid of junk in a second. He wants to down grade, he getting out of racing and wants a nice street engine.

Even if you have to buy new forged pistons for the big block, you'd be way better off in my book but thats> JMO

Then I got to buy forged rods and crank or they become the weak link. Dont want to throw boost to a cast piston thats already on a .30 overbore block, take a chance or melting a piston and rod coming apart and goin through my block.

Jordan,
either way you look at it, your SB <> or his BB

Your going to need all forged internals anyway for this supercalafristic turbo you got.

No sense beating around the bush here, build yours or take a look at this 454 and see what it's got, you can't post or wish this dudes motor into something it is or ain't - theres noway of knowing with out taking it apart period.

I agree with Charlie......350's are everyhere...a good 454 core would cost you 5 to 6 hundred bucks

i paid $800 for my block on here and you can find some good
forged parts on here to fill the block with and even make a
468 or a 496 for cheap, (not too cheap) but yea charlie said
since you've sprayed your stock cast sbc already i would swap
the life on that sbc after being sprayed is edgie especialy with
cast slugs and crank, cast parts don't last too long on spray
good luck

Question????????? How much boost does youre turbo make or planning to make? You may have to change the pistons in the bigblock anyway. IMO! If you are going to trade even what are you losing, sounds to me like you are gaining something. Do you think the 454 will run quicker then the 355 as it sits in youre car? Kris

the turbo I have is a garrett GTA42, 74.5 mm turbo. Not to sure how much boost it will put out, but it is brand new and never been used. it is an internal wastegate setup. Was going to put it on my sbc but I know over 8 lbs boost will kill it. the 454 is already .30 over, been told that takes it up to a 468. it has stock reworked oval port heads, 615/636 lift cam, 296/304 duration. I think the turbo on it would scream. Any thoughts?

Jordan i know we got off on the wrong foot, but trade the 350 for the b/blk, forget about the turbo, just run a 750 holly on it. 350's are a dime a doz. can be bought anywhere for $100.00 to $200.00 a 454 as mentioned before if it's gen 4 is worth $350.00 to $600.00, make the trade and smile all day long. It can handle 600HP with stock parts. I just built a 468 with all stock parts except heads runs 10.56@ 127mph in a 3700lb car.

MY OPINION ON YOUR TURBO...... YOU SAID YOU ARE A BEGINNER AND NO EXPERT... I THINK YOU SHOULD STICK WITH THE BASICS AND WORK YOUR WAY UP TO A TURBO, OR HAVE SOME TURBO PRO GUY BUILD THE ENGINE AND SET UP THE CAR FOR YOU.... I DONT KNOW WHAT KIND OF CHASSIS YOU HAVE OR DRIVETRAIN SETUP BUT ALOT OF BEGINNERS THINK IT JUST TAKES AN ENGINE TO GO FAST.. BEST OF LUCK IN 09 RACE SEASON....

bbc is the way to go i hope by now u have it cause that opportunity doesnt come often, also most 454 can go more than a thirty thou overbore
