View Full Version : My Running Scammer Diary

Scorpion1110

Well I finally got bit by a Scammer on another site, after doing an incredible amount of pre-purchase due diligence. So now I get to go after him- And honestly I am looking forward to it. I have some new techniques that I'd like to try.

Would the Forum users be interested in a kind of running diary as I chase him, and the techniques that I am planning on using? If you feel it might be useful, I will do some regular posts on the issue, but I dont want to take time from the regular RJ users who need assistance as it did not happen on this site.

Let me know and if the feedback is favorable, then I will keep you regularly updated- that is if he hasnt already cried uncle. I have been at him for a few days lol.

I'll post a longer piece tonite, covering the due-diligence process I used-(not fool-proof), and then my approach to recovery as well as links to sites in the following days. If it is useful, perhaps the Mod's can put a sticky on it for other folks to use.

It took me about 5 minutes to locate his parents, who very kindly provided me with his exact location and phone number. different city from his mail drop-though I have a hunch thats his girl friend. I will be going after her next.

This evening I will be checking Court Records in Ohio. I have a feeling based on an email from him that he is involved in a divorce case, and I will hopefully be on the phone to his ex-wife and her attorney within the next 24 hours. I think a little joy from his bitter ex is in order dont you think?

DEAR DIARY---YES! Most of us can gain a lot from this. My situation is stalled out-going nowhere. ALTERD526 has cut off all communication and so far the web sites suggested to me to get an address on him have failed.
Thanks Scorp for being willing to help some scammer victims!.......E.T.

You are knowledgable about this kind of thing already.. you can really help some people who might otherwise give up to the bureaucracy & legal ramifications with pursuing a scammer. Go for it!! Scooter

First of all no gauratees that everything or anything will work for everyone. Second, you will have absolutely no leverage with anyone who doesnt have "skin in the game", so if you get an email from a Nigerian Scammer and then send money- write it off its gone.

Before I start in on my target scammer-let me outline the criteria that I use for internet deals.

If I want to buy something posted on a website I am looking for a few things:

1) Is he a website member? I want to know this because to join a website he provided the website personal info including a credit card. I know that later I might be able to get that info via complaint, subpoena or what not.

For example in the case of RJ it means more to me that someone is a member than who has made honor payments. A scammer could set up an elaborate scam and actually make some honor payments, but if he joined the site? He's revealed some info about himself and I WANT IT.

2) Does he have friends? Most websites have a friends option. I want to see he has friends, because I can go through them to get info on him. Friends dont like to be accomplices so they will either provide info, or they might message him. Peer pressure can be a wonderful thing.

3) I look for Board posts. If he is posting then he's part of the community, has built relationships and maybe friendships. Those things are hard to walk away from and generally won't be risked by a seller.

So if you meet those criteria, then I'll probably buy from you. My scammer met all three so he looked safe. However he wasn't.

So what did I do?

I pm'd him about my manifolds and received excuse one- I've been sick. So I waited a week, still no manifolds. I pm'd him again.

The next excuse I received was I shipped to the wrong address. I waited another week. Still no manifolds. PM'd again and got excuse I have had court issues and have been indisposed. OK, I wait another week- no manifolds.

Now its time to attack.

First thing I did was gather all info to see what I had. I had a name and and address and I could PM or email him through the site. Not enough info. I checked his profile and got his state and city. OK helpful.

I then did a www.whitepages.com look-up on the address I sent the check to looking for a phone number. I found one and noted it. I also saw that www.Intellius.com had some public records info on that person- OK more available info.

I then posted a message on a GENERAL bulletin board on the site (thats important-not a scammer board but general discussion), informing the population that I'd been scammed, asking for info and appealing to his friends to assist me as failure to do so would make them a partner to the scam. The general board is important because his friends might not visit the scammer board, but should hit the main board.

Guess what? I find out he's been doing it to others and his friends start emailing him (copy to me) and providing me info. I know have confirmed that his name isnt an alias. His friends dont like that he's been scamming others.

Back to Whitepages.com to look up his name, city and state. I get an address and phone number. Heres where it helps to be an actor.

I call the number and a guy answers. I say I heard that Mr. X is a great car builder and was wondering where I could get in touch with him to discuss a job for him to build a car. I find out I am talking to his parent, who volunteers all sorts of info and gives me another number for him.

Back to Whitepages to look up number- Its a cell and in a different city. OK, so I call from my office line and leave a message that I am interested in hirirng him for a hot rod build.

So now I know his name, where his parents live, multiple phone numbers, and have guessed that the woman I sent the check to is his girlfriend. I then go back and re-read the emails- I note a comment about Court - (Always chat up the seller and try to get personal info and write it down or save the email).

Now all states make court cases public record. I do a search, find his states database, more info and a plaintiff and attorney name available to be found if he's in Court- Big deal here- Why? because if he's in court, whatcha think his wife's attorney is going to do when he finds out that the other party is a reputed Internet Scammer?

If I cant get it from the database, then I need to call the Court to vouch records- The State AG might as well if the purported Scammer has a business.

Now I know a bit more- So I call the house of his parents and get little brother who tells me target is out. I tell him shame because I will be filing legal papers with regard to him, his Custody case and his girlfriend as an accomplice to fraud. Guess what?

My prey is on the phone. I then had at him, professionally, and in a very quiet low voice. My next post will expand a little; but I told him that Hell is coming for him and I was delivering it personally. When I mentioned my letter to his spouse and her attorney, he got very quiet.

More later, I've had my foot on his throat all day and am tired.

Thanks guys as always for your support!

Here is another installment to the chase.

When I had him on the phone yesterday, he whined, and played the victim-Scammers usually do. You will note that many scammer posts have the complaintant saying the scammer is now a good guy. Thats because most people are decent and want to believe the scammer just made a mistake- well he didnt! He took your money and had no intentions of making good- he thought you would go away. The only reason he is making good is he got caught.

So while my scammer whined on the phone- I told him coldly that I will have his wife and her attorney on the phone tomorrow explaining that I was filing suit against him for Mail fraud a federal crime- since he was in court anyway-it would probably be admissable with regard to character. I believe at this point he wet himself.

He then whined about not having money for shipping, even though I'd sent it. I told him to borrow it from his father, or I'd discuss it with his parents personally since I had their number. He wet himself again-Obviously they werent involved. I also told him I'd go after his girl-friend for mail fraud as well.

The important thing is that I had collected all his info and knew everything about him- Thats because I collected data before I confronted him. Very important- You will catch them off guard when you share their own personal info with them.

Today I checked my posts- and found that several of his on-line friends have ditched him, and that the general forum has eaten him alive- remember he is a member with 500 posts so he values the site.

He told me he shipped today and to get off his back, as I didnt know what he'd been through. I told him he is not a victim but a common thief and I will stay on him until the other users pm me that they have gotten their parts or refunds. He also is quite unhappy that my signature for posts has his name and that he scammed me. I have been trying to post Where I can so that everyone sees he scammed me.

I got some emails today that he has contacted the other guys and has started to resolve the issue- we'll see.

The key points to remember for your Internet trading/buying:

Try to make sure that the seller has "skin in the game" he's registered, and is a member and poster-remember you gotta give personal info to join,

Once you think you have been scammed, start collecting personal info before you confront him-as soon as you confront him he will respond- you need to be able to catch him so you need info,

Be an actor, pretend to be another buyer when you first speak with him or a family member to collect info, everyone gets chatty when they think theres some coin coming in,

Do not ever raise your voice-it'll make it look like you are not in control. A calm low voice will scare the scammer a bit, because they wont understand why you are not mad,

Always make sure that they know you have free legal advice (whether its the truth or not), if it doesnt cost anything for an attorney then you are more likely to sue, and

Always check the local court cases for his jurisdiction- it always helps to see hwo else is chasing him and he'll freak when you know his court history and that you are attempting to contact the other attorney to share that you are suing the scammer for mail fraud.

At the end of the day, there are no gaurantees, but at least there is some option to tick off the scammer- and what you might simply find is that your only recovery is the satisfaction of making him squirm.

I'll keep you guys posted- btw, he has started calling me names so I think I've worked my way under his skin.

If you listened real careful around noon today you would have heard the sound of a Scammer crying and whining- Music to my ears.

When I am finished with this guy I will post the links to the site and the PM chronology along with some comments at key leverage points-It might help when dealing with a scammer.

I also want to snoop around RJ to see if he might be a member- Its a needle in a haystack, but I figured I'd play a little look-see when things got quiet.

This is a good documentary that will help many. It is a fairly simple plan that just requires due dilligance & consistencey. I like the fact that you mention/stress staying cool... but keeping constant pressure on him. Pulling out more knowledge as you need it to hold him accountable. Great idea checking the court data base too... putting more pressure & inflicting pain upon an existing issue... making it worse. It is simply a diabolical way of justice.... I LOVE IT!!! Gentlemen:

I am going to tell you why you should be very proud of the Mods we have here, Tom, Brian and Perry.

The Site Admin on the Site where I have been chasing my Scammer is bustin my chops because I have been too hard on the Scammer (he has promised to make right and has now posted a delivery confirm.)

He said I made threats when I told the Scammer to be careful in what he posts - he called me out while I was out of town lol.

The Scammer shipped on 04/17/09 after I paid him on 02/23/09 and I have had a zillion other guys tell me he did the same to them. The Site Admin says I was rough on him.

Our Mods, the users and this Forum are simply the best on the Web.

Brilliant! Well done Scorpion.

I got done by a business that used to advertise on this web site. I chose them after contacting them for prices on parts and received VERY good customer service. I placed the order, provided my credit card, and received an invoice showing payment completed.

Because I am overseas, I asked for the items to be sent to a shipping broker in CA for shipping here. To cut a long story short I was finally united with my shipment 4 months later, except, it wasn't all there.

I contacted the company and received a promise to look into the missing item. That was it. After that I started chasing them, emailing, calling, nearly got it resolved, but that came to naught.

I contacted my credit card company expecting some result from them, that was a waste of time (note to self, it's a bank, they don't care even if they say they do). So like you, I got a little cunning. I decided to tell everyone about what had happened.

I noted all the companies they advertised on their web site and wrote to all those companies explaining the situation. It involved some VERY big name companies in America, including a couple that are multinational. I received some replies, and heard that those companies had been in touch with the thief to find out what was going. Whether he placated them or not, it meant that he was getting a bad name with those big name companies.

I also put an advert on this web site with the same keywords as their's so that it came up in searches near their advert. In mine I explained what had happened. Shortly after that they stopped advertising here, and their web site has closed down.

I don't know if the business is still operating, perhaps under a new name, but at least I was able to do something even if I didn't get my money back.

had the same thing happen to me on a different site, I spoke to 2 different lawyers and they both said I’m better off to write it off as a loss because of the time and effort it will cost to try to do something about it and the likely hood of something happening isn’t that good. If it was for thousands of dollars that would be a different store but for $900 it’s just not worth it. The guy I delt with took me for $700 than to top it off I got a letter from his lawyer for a public slander issue on a website because I slammed him on that message bored it’s just funny how our system works.

Caveat any public postings that are not certifiably true with in your Opinion and theres not a damn thing the lawyer can do except puff out his chest and act tough.

Nice well the lesson I learned is if I don’t know the seller than I’m not buying. It sucks people out there are dead beat losers that will do anything to make a dollar I just wrote it off and moved on it wasn’t going to be worth all the BS stuff I was going to have to go threw to try to get my money back, both lawyers I spoke to told me straight up the likely hood of me getting my money back wasn’t good at all. So than I would have a few hundred dollars invested in that with no guarantee of getting my $700 back.

You know I had something like what happend to Scorpion, happen to me also on another major auction site and I was of that same thinking. That for my measly $159 it just wasn't worth the trouble. But you know what? That was my damn money and this guy just took it. It wasn't any different to me if he had been standing right beside me. I would feel the same about it. I did the same thing to him as Scorp did to his deadbeat seller. It's not that hard to track anyone down these days thanks to the level these kinds of sites take to make sure you put enough personal info on record to make it possible to find you even if you think your smart enough to beat it. Just remember this whether you go after yours or not. A thief's biggest ally is people who think finding and prosecuting them is a waste of their time or more money! That is why there are so many who do it. In my opinion I would rethink your decision and put another deadbeat out on his ass!

Scorp, I just wanted everyone who's following this string (who haven't seen my own scammer alert fable) knows how helpful you've been to me in my pursuit of the infamous Sleeths. You information, suggestions, and encouragement have been at the backbone of driving the Sleeths into hiding (at least for the time being).

One concern, I'm not certain yet, but I think I may have spotted a new ad on EBay that looks very much like the format the Sleeths use. I don't want to cause any harm to an innocent person, just be advised to be very, very careful of any ad for a pair of Holley 4224 carburetors. There is more than one ad running on EBay for 4224's, but there is one in particular that looks very Sleeth-like.

Anyway, many thanks to Scorp for being the model to emulate in the scammer-hunting business.

I downloaded pics off his profile and found his girl friend and her address. I spoke to her as well- I let her know that since she took his checks that she was his accomplice- since she was from out of the country- I mentioned that I would have to inform INS that she was running a scam and maybe they would revoke her visa. She wasnt happy about that.

I got the manifolds and never even opened them, I gave them to the guy that bought the car from me.

And the punk who tried to scam me? When he found out that I gave them away, he posted :what kind of hot rodder are you?"

I guess I am the kind who is committed.

So it ended in a positive and I learned a bunch along the way.

A scamer usually doesn't just have one thing wrong with their life. Usually has several or many things going on. Can we just kill 'em all?? PLEASE!

SURE I'll pitch in and hep you out especially if the site is the Big E, or the shipper with initials SPU as I've been screwed too many times by both of them..
I also have a bone to pick with a fellow rj.com user from Kingsport TN by the name of BRIAN OLINGER 3404 Glen Alpine Rd, Kingsport , TN 37660
423-349-8216 home and 423-360-0299 cell I guess. This jerk ripped me off for $325 and never sent me the parts and it's been over a month since he recieved the postal MO. I always use postal MO as Imwas unnder the impression it was safer but the hassel you have to go thru is outrageous if you know what I mean.
Anybody else having dirty dealings with this theif and might know a Detective at his local police dept I sure would appreciate the info as it seems when ever I call the Sullivan County Sheriff office they sound like they are buddies with him and I can't get a bit of help so I will have to file thrumy local Police dept and we all know how that works right..
Again, any help or info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks SCORPION1110

If you buy something that is in another state and they do not deliver. It is a Felony and the FBI WILL get involved if contacted. You can contact your SBI ( State B. of Invegation ) they will turn it over to the FBI. If it is by Federal mail or in another state. Honestly they will HAMMER THEM

I recently got ripped off by a member on racingjunk. I had agreed to purchase some brakes from him for $500 The seller was extremely quick to reply and answer any questions. Once I had sent payment, this guy stopped all communication. I did not use paypal because the seller would not accept.

I have since filed a police report with his address and information he gave me. This was about a month and a half ago.

Here is his original ad, neither him nor racing junk have taken it down:

http://www.racingjunk.com/Late-Model...-calipers.html

I really hope nobody else got scammed by this guy either.

Turns out I am browsing Ebay and I see this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/140642959699...84.m1423.l2649

Looks familiar huh? This motherfucker is trying to scam more people with this shit. I have messaged him through ebay with some questions and he replies right away with the same answers I have gotten from him before. I asked for a phone number because I was very interested in picking them up. I will see if he responds.

Anyone know what else I can do to get this guy back or somehow recover my funds?

Ebay ad had been ended by him, here it is:

http://oi41.tinypic.com/sngzua.jpg

He responds to me again:

Before you slander who I am on other sites maybe you should get your facts straight. I am not the guy who ripped you off before nor do I have a clue who it is. I used pictures that I found online to make it easier. I will be taking the listing down and putting them back up after I take real pics of the brakes both on and off the car. I didnt use real pics because the calipers on still on the car. So just for you info you got the wrong guy, go look elsewhere. If you google or yahoo image search alcon calipers you will see the same pics come up. Dont run me through the mud because you got screwed by someone else.

I replied with a message saying how his responses were identical on both ebay and racing junk. I also posted his address and name in the reply to him.

Then he sends this:

Well aparently they are they are the same type of caliper. The only question you asked me was rotor thickness. Which the rotors these calipers used are the most common used in any form of road racing. The calipers have already been sold and no whoever that guy is , is not me I live 30 miles east of Fresno, Ca. I dont have a clue where Carmichael even is. now leave me alone cause i wont anwser any more email reguarding your rediculas claim. You got the wrong guy here but sorry about your misfortune. For your info I have never even got on racingjunk thats a east coast drag racing site. Now I am done explaining myself to you.

I also noticed some of his other auctions were taken down and there is only 3 of them still running. He either scammed some other people or got scared and took them down. His story keeps getting better and better!

I have talked to this guy Harry S. by phone. Tried to buy the intake he still has listed in ad 182366294. He said it is sold. After reading your post, I messaged him on that ad and suggested he might want to resolve this issue you have brought up. I did NOT mention he is being talked about here. If he still does not come around, maybe you want to start a new topic on him under the FEEDBACK and SCAMMERS section and refer him to his topic by messaging him on that ad?

Hi and thanks for the feedback...STILL have never heard from him...doubt I will...texted him 2 days ago and offered to pay shipping again (in case he had no money to pay shipping} if he would send parts COD...no response I just cant understand what his issue would be unless he is just a scammer.

I was contacted by a man using the name Anthony Deal at the end of September inquiring about my Boninfante pedal clutch. It took about two texts to realize that this was a scam. Didn't ask any questions about the clutch, etc. He said he would send me a check. The area code of his phone was in my area, so I told him to just come to my shop or I would deliver it. He insisted on having his "shipper" pick it up. He eventually sent me a check for $1400 more than the clutch and I was supposed to give the balance to his shipper. His area code was in Ohio, the check was from a company in New York and he mailed it from Texas. My bank manager called the company in NY and they said they have had numerous calls like this and it was not a good check. Yesterday I received a check from a Texas area code about the zoomies I have advertised. He was smart enough to ask a few questions, but then started the same stuff about sending me his bank check and his "mover" would pick it up. I told him I only take US postal money orders and ship UPS. No reply. Racing Junk is a great site, but now the Craig's List predators seem to have found it.

Anthony J Finn of Bellwood Illinois has scammed at least 3 people on Racing Junk recently. He posted pictures of other ads on Racing Junk with his address and phone number. He becomes a new member every tine he posts an ad. So far he has posted a new carb for $400, a new nitrous controller for $350, and a new fuel pump for $200. No one has received their parts yet. He talks to you on the phone, by email and texts until he has your money then blocks you.

Scorp could use your advise. I am a seller and I am retiring soon moving South
to be closer to my ageing in laws.

I have several adds posted and have been a member for many years. I don't post my address
for fear that dishonest people may use that information. But want honest buyers to trust me.

How do I protect myself and gain the buyers trust.

Thanks,
Mike

I posted my first ad today and within ten minutes I had someone texting me wanting a bunch of personal information. The number is 386 742 3246. I sure hope this isn't normal!

BigBlockMark
03-04-2017, 05:14 AM
Probably not normal. I post ads on Racing Junk regularly and only a few are questionable. If the specific item you post is not mentioned in the inquiry, I just ignore it. If the person really wants it they will call you if they don't get a response back to their written inquiry. Any contact that feels the least bit fishy, just ignore. Do not respond. There are enough legit buyers out there to sell to without giving out any info you don't feel comfortable with putting out there for a scammer to use against you.

I have sold over 100 items on Racing Junk and it is still the best place I have found to buy and sell on.

Very simple to call the bank the suspicious check is drawn on. They'll tell you if the account is real and if it has enough funds to cover the check amount.

I had a scammer try to pull this on me. They even got confused and sent me two checks from different addresses.
I checked and both of them were forged. I turned them over, along with all my communications with the scammer to my local sheriff's office. LOL

I have been contacted by text by 2 numbers from CA, 619-609-0648--says that we wants my Jr dragster will send me a certified check and he will take care of shipping. Last text now says he will send me the certified check to cover shipping and I just take the $$ and pay the shipping company. Now I know this is a scam because who would ship an older jr dragster across the U.S. when you could buy them locally. I just got another text from 949-431-2391 CA asking if the car is still available, I suspect I will get the same story.

scammers are con artist and don't be misled by their unsound excuses . Get a copy of a detailed quote and archive it,copy it and make sure you put what is for on bank ck, or money order and make copies, records of any CC $ handy . and check them out big time, and if they get flaky , expose them !!!
