what are the advantages /disadvantage to haveing a delay box ? do you half to have it to drag race

First, no you don't have to have one to race or win. The biggest advantage for me is having the ablity to change my reaction time without changing the car or the way I react. It's also generally more consistent to leave off the top bulp, or the first flash, instead of waiting for, and sometimes anticipating the bottom yellow. Also some boxes allow you to take a second hit on the bottom bulb, or if your track runs crosstalk, you can even get a third.
The only disadvantage for me has been when the starter is really quick activating the tree. You need to be VERY ready when you stage.......

The only disadvantage I know of is that you can not run a footbrake class with one.
