I had a 355 built for my son to run for his first year out of jr dragsters. Give me your opinions of what i can expect from this motor hp and torque wise. we are running 1/8th mile and are hoping to run in the 9.0 range.

355 smallblock chevy
performer cam 278 adv duration .420/.442 lift
performer vortec intake
headers
vortec heads with upgraded springs
flat top pistons (keith black huepertectic)
650 speed demon carb
Th2oo4r with 2200 stall (built heavy duty with shift kit)
8.5 inch rear with 3:73 gears
Car is a 87 Monte SS weighs about 3300

i think your looking at 350hp on the high side with 290/300 ft lbs of TQ.

The car will most likely run 9.60 range @ 68/70 MPH in the 1/8..This is just My opinion based on what i had at 16 yrs old.

Little more stall (3,000) and More gear (4.30) with 26 inch tires will make a huge difference once he gets ready to get a little quicker...and should get you more towards the 9.0 range...right Now she is gonna lug some with the converter and Gear..cause there's not a whole lot of motor nor gear, converter to get the heavy car moving

Reguardless of what it runs, i'm happy to see that you are moving up, and starting a little slower for him to get used too driving the big car from JR dragsters, so many of the top driver of today got their start in the JR's and it's a perfect starting point for kids, if i had any at home of the right age i'll guarentee you i would have them in the JR's.
Good luck and keep on keeping on

Thanks,, you are right, the Jrs were some good times this will be our first year out of them and ill miss it. I just want him to get a season in a slower car before he gets in a fast one.His class starts at 9.0 and up so if i can get him at the lower 9s he will be chasing more often. In the Jrs he was excellent at running the top end.

saying with 8:5:1 compression,.I come up with

321HP @ 5000
360 TQ @ 4000

I think you probly will do better than nines in the 1/8, and Once he
learns the car and drives it right it will probly run 8.70-8.80`s,...
put a 4.11 in it you would be more better running 1/8 mile times
in the 8.50`s.

Back in the summer I finished up a 355 for a customer that is 19yrs. old and is just starting. Flattop piston, .450" lift cam, 1.94valve stock heads, performer intake, with a 600vacuum holley. converted to a 350 tranny w/ 3500stall & 3.73 gear, also an 87 monte SS, radial tire. I opted not to use a double pumper carb. at this time because of his experiance & the weight of the car. When he leaves at 2000rpm has very little spinning runs 9.13-9.18 in the 1/8th mi. I made him go down the track 8 times that day during test/tune. started off at 9.27. He drives it everyday. Now he is going to try a 750vacuum carb and a set of 26x8slicks this weekend. Kris

we took the monte to the track, the one I mentioned earlier. did not change the tires or go to a bigger carb. I just tuned the 600vacuum that is on there now. yesterday was the first points race so he only got to make 2 passes. firstr pass he ran a 9.07, second pass ran a 9.01 at 77 mph. weather was about the same as 2 weeks ago.

Thanks ,, seeing how we have the same car and better gearing with the overdrive and better heads. Id think with drag radials we should be around the 9.0 range .. We start in may Ill post up what we ran.. thanks again

have you had a chance to try it out yet? Kris

Ive only got to drive it on the street a little because of the terrible weather here. Its got a ton or torque , Im probably gonna have to find him a set of drag radials ,,, with street tires its all over the place when you get on it hard.

well the kid put his 650 d.p. on there this week and his mickeythompson street radials last week. last week w/ the tires he slowed down from a 9.01 to a 9.24. tonight he did better w/ a 8.97 after going to the D.P. carb. so now he is learning how to drive it all over again w/ just those 2 changes made. I think its got about an 8.80 in it when he gets good and comfy w/ the changes made to his Monte. How is youre's doing. I'm sure that o-drive low gear is going to give better 60 ft. times. This one now takes 1.91 60 ft. but its a t-350 w/ a 3200 stall, believe it or not he's getting 3000 out of it. Kris

Hey Mopar 1968, sounds like you had some bad experience w/ the chevys, If you can make a mopar stay together, a chevy shouldnt be a problem, maybe. I run a blown 392 on one of my FED's on occasion. I made every girdle in the damn thing. I say occasionally because if it does come apart, where am I going to find another one w/out having to pay outrageous price's for old parts. I like'em and build'em all. Kris 2cents

You know how it is, if it works for you stick with it. The ones you see at the track that grenade their's haven't learned that yet, I guess. We did get some test/tune in this evening over in waynesboro, the only part of the day that actually had sunlight. Where is Abingdon, I'm in Staunton 1hr. N. of Roanoke, 1hr. S. of Winchester. Kris

Mopars never blow up on the strip.

cause they usually break down on the trailer....I seen one spin a rod bearing sitting in the trailer shut off.

Well at least it had to start in order to spin a bearing, unlike a ''CHEBBY'' that won't start :!: :!:

We have raced 2 times now but we are having distributor problems. The first time we ran in the 9.65 range but the car bogged till about half track. It took me a while but i figured out the car was getting no advance till about 4400 rpms. Tried lighter springs (HEI DIST) but got too much advance and it was erratic. Last weekend i unhooked the vacume advance and bumped the initial timing up to 20 degrees and it ran a 9.23 but still bogs for a good 120 feet or more. Im guessing my cheapo hei is a peice of junk . Im thinkin of ordering a msd streetfire . ive heard these are easier to set the advance curve in.
