What do you consider high rpms ?
Better heads out there to get 1000hp out of a 540 is taugh as it is without a ton of work.

I am not sure what you consider high rpm, but I run my 540 around 8000 - 8200 rpm and my engine had Dart 355 CNC heads on them. My engine was just about 900 hp. They didn't flow enough air so I ordered a set of Edelbrock Victor heads from Curtis at RFD.

IMO you will need to find a very happy dyno to get 1000hp, 900 can be had though. My 548 made 950hp but had a lot of work done to it, piston, head, intake wise. The heads will be a big hold back for your combo you should call RFD and get them worked on if the budget allows.

THANKS FOR INPUT JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY TO GO I SEEN IN THE CLASSIFED SECTION SOMEBODY HAD SOME BEAST HEADS FOR SALE PORTED BY REHERMORRISON WITH SHAFT ROCKERS .JUST WONDERING IF THOSE WOULD GET ME IN THE POWER RANGE I'M LOOKING FOR.

Would they work yes .. are they the best far from.
Dart 355's, Brodix bb3 x's, BMF 385's, RFD Edelbrocks
All conv heads thats will work well and make the most HP/TQ
18 Degree stuff Big Dukes would be what I'd look for but your going to spend bigger money there.
Is there some reason you need to stay 540 ? Much easier to get there (1000hp) with a 572/582 Combo if you have to buy the stuff anyways why not go bigger ?

THE THING IS I HAVE A GM 502 BLOCK NOT A AFTER MARKET BLOCK .I THOUGHT I WOULD NEED A AFTER MARKET BLOCK TO GET 572ci ISN'T THE LIMIT ON THE GM BLOCK 555-565 I'M NOT DEAD SET ON 540

If you plan on running 8000 rpms, don't skemp on the block. The block, crank, and rods are what decide how long your engine will last. Especially at 8000rpm. Get a Dart block and go to the next step.

Which GM 502 is it, a Bowtie ?
Like Parker mentioned a motor that spins that high will need very good parts to stay alive. Titanium valves would also be on that list.

I bought the Dart 355 CNC heads from Reher Morrison along with their CNC Edelbrock Super Victor with 1" spacer and reversion plate. They are good heads, but they don't flow much over 400 cfm. I don't think you will achieve the power your looking for with the 355s without doing a lot of work to them and you can get Edelbrock Victor heads from RFD that will be CNC'd for you motor and application that will suit you better if you are staying with a conventional style head. I know "obsessedtruck's" motor and his Big Dukes are awesome from RFD. Are you planning on putting titanium valves on the intake side?

WELL IT COMES TO BIG CHIEF HEADS OR VICTOR HEADS. FIXING TO PUT A FRESH VAVLE JOB ON MY AFR 335 SO I CAN SELL THEM. TRYING TO GET THE NEW HEADS FIRST BEFORE ORDRING THE BOTTOMEND SO EVERTHING MATCHES UP.I APPRECIATE EVERYBODYS INPUT ON THIS SUBJECT .

Oval ports are the way to go now you'd make the power you wanted with them heads for sure, and can put good valve in them.

just how good are the new brodix oval port -3 extra heads compared to the conventional rect port heads of the same port volumn. Anyone have any experience with them?

thats some IMPRESSIVELY HUGE #'S for a 522ci and this is considered a small engine this day and time.
I hope the Guy is reading this that told me 1150 hp for a 18 degree Big chief 565ci is a little agreesive.....i will let your post and 522ci #'s speak for this issue.

ah guess I didnt see the wise "par" crack there. One thing to remember them dukes IMO are a lot better setup then the old big chief stuff. One of the 565 I spoke up is a buddy of mine he also has a 584ci big chief motor that is .25 slower then the 565 big duke and made 115hp less on the dyno. They were less then impressed with the 584 compared to the 565 with duke heads. No doubt 1120-1130 could be had with the proper builder with the right 18 degree setup. Anymore 18 degree is old school 18 degree guys are going either to 11/12/14 degree and the 16 degree has really came into the picture. A lot have switched back to the conv heads because todays heads bb3x's can keep up with a lot of the 18 degree setups without the issues the 18 degree stuff is known for (lifters). :D

These # are from a dyno-jet chassis dyno @ the shop where i work.I know my exact driveline loss. I engine dynoed then stuck in the truck w/o changeing notning. 31%. This is with 3 1/2"s of carb spacer using the new Brodix 1913 intake design. Needless to say to say the intake is going to have alot more work done on it in the next few weeks. Stronger #s (maybe).
Those 565's @ 1150hp is 2.03 hp per cube
my 522 is 2.049 hp per cube with RFDs, port work

  .....8000-8800 on a BBC you better have a good foundation like dart/merlin block.....Why are you thinking about buzzing a BBC that high for? Just a question? most BBC create their HP between 5500-7000rpm....or are stump pulling low end engines.....hmmmmm just thinking if you add a 200 shot to that 540 1000 ponies.....just a thought

BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE TO RUN OPEN CLASS AND THERE IS NO OPEN CLASS IN THIS AREA. IWANT TO RUN ALL MOTOR SO I MAY HAVE SUCK IT UP AND BUY A DART BLOCK AND BUILD A 572 OR 598 THIS MOTOR WILL BE PUT IN A S-10 4X4 FOR DIRTDRAGS/MUDBOGS . MY 468 WAS BUILT WITH A LITE WEIGHT ASSEMBLY IT WOULD ZING . IT DON'T HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO COMPETE AGAINST SOME OF THE BIGGER MOTORS I WOULD GO AGAINST.[/img]

....yeah but may be down on hp but the right shot ot NOS can make an evener of a 468 with 700hp say 1 or 2 systems activated by a microswitch at the carb to activate both 300 hp systems at the hit of the trottle can you say.........   MOVE out of the way...hehehehehe :D :D :D

LIKE I SAID BEFORE I'M INTO MUDRACING NOT DRAG RACING THE RULES ARE WAY DIFFERENT. ONLY THE OPEN CLASS WE CAN HAVE POWER ADDERS SUCH AS NOS. WE DON'T HAVE A OPEN CLASS IN THIS AREA YET. THATS THE CLASS THE PRO RAILS RACE IN , THATS 25-35000 DOLLARS FOR A BLOWER MOTOR . THATS OUT OF MY LEAGUE.....
