I'm running a dragster with vacuum pump and belt drive fuel pump. So I'm not going to have room for my alternator. I'm thinking about going to a 16 volt battery. I have never ran anything but 12 volt system. Is the 16 volt battery a good option and if so whats the best 16 volt battery to buy. Has anyone noticed any advantages and/or disadvantages to the 16 volt system?

They do have a lot more cranking power which is a good upside, also having plenty of voltage is a plus

Dowsides, more $ up front for battery and chrager, will need charged every round, when a 16v goes low it takes a lot longer to charge.

IMO a good Napa Orbital or 2 if you have room, and a charge every round will be fine.

I had to move my vac pump so the alt would fit.

Now that I like!!
Where do you have the catch can for the smog pump mounted? My new vacuum pump has v groove pullies, do you think they'll give any problems with the pump mounted that far away. Do you still have any order numbers for the alternator stuff on your car. I'd like to order the exact same part to make sure it will go in the same place.
thanks again

I have the catch can mounted under the motor, empty it every 3-4 passes, but could go longer without needing it. The only reason I have my vac pump on the right side of the motor instead of the left is that how the valve covers were setup and I didnt want to buy new chromes at the time. You could actually mount it on the top left on the head where its made to be mounted and it'd work well. The pump wont matter that its that fat away as long as you have the belt setup correct. I like the gillmer pulley setups for everything so they dont slip but have used the vbelt int he past.

Here is the bracket and alt I used

and 90% sure this is the alt I used

I mounted the alt and vac pump off the engine plate and ran them off the same v belt. The alt was mounted solid and the vac pump bracket was the adjustment. Not only worked but i could change belts and just run the vac pump on race day.

Nope it won't give you a full charge. The 16v charger charges at 18v to 18.8v, were the 12v charger charges at 16v.
