Mahle Pistons ? How much spray can they handle

I picked up a set BNIB on a deal and didnt have time to do any research...

We plan on running them with a 300shot plate system
on a 489 BBC........ They look OK but I am worried about the high silicon content may want to cry and quit when they see some n20 action

I'm not a fan of Mahle pistons, but i can tell you that a friend built a 383" with a street blower, 6 lbs. boost, and the very first time he stepped on it, it broke 6 of the 8 pistons. They seperated at the top ring groove, and the rings had .028 end gap at assmy. I think you might be flirting with danger with any amount of nitrous.

I have heard mahle are not good for nos or boost.

i guess the 2618 alloy aluminum is a much better grade for nitrous or boost applications by what ive read.ive heard the entry level forged pistons are ok for low levels but moderate and higher 2618 is better

Mitch,

A properly tuned 300hp nitrous system should be fine. These pistons use 2618 alloy forgings and will hold up to a fair amount of abuse. As you mentioned detonation is a piston killer and as long as you stay away from sustained periods of it you should be ok.

I think I'll keep them and give them a whirl - the larger dome pistone like the ones I have are the 2618 alloy - many others are not,,,,,,,
