i believe the 915 close chamber head it one of the best late 60's engines were your best they came factory with forged cranks

915 might be hard to find but 906 are a good choice also for an intake any torker works great along with a 700 or 750 holley and a 509 purple shaft cam will give lots of torque.

Another alternative is the 516 head. They were a closed chamber design but really should have a mild port job as well as machining for bigger valves for the most bang for the buck.
If you are doing a pump gas engine, you might want to deck the block and run a shorter(lighter) piston. Alot of guys do this and run BBC pistons. The stock dimension Mopar stuff is really heavy. Also, those big blocks are sensitive to detonation so by decking the block you will have better quench which will help on that end. Good luck, and happy tire-frying to you!! :)

I didn't mention before, 440 Mopars came with forged cranks all the way mid way through 1973. Also the standard "LY" (i think) rods are capable of anything up to around 600 hp. The heavy duty 6pack rods are tough, but HEAVY. The forged cranks are really tough and very capable of a pounding. Not sure what your power/rpm goals are or your budget, but stock Mopar forged stuff is pretty sturdy. Just make sure you don't end up with a cast crank/balancer. They are OK, but I wouldn't run them in front of a 4-gear.
If you find a cast set of heads, be careful before putting $'s in them. Get a quote for all cleaning, magging, machining etc. and price out decent valvetrain parts. By the time you are done, you might be awful close to a set of decent assembled aluminum heads. The aluminum heads will tolerate at least 10.25:1 on a premium pump gas mopar and will take some weight off that beast.
Just food for thought........

I would go with the 440 source aluminum heads You can get a set for under a grand and out of the box they flow much more than a set of oem mopar heads will...go to 440source.com and enjoy...

I would use a 400 block as their physically smaller. larger bore than a 440.the webbing in the 230 block is like an aftermarket block while the 630 block should suffice. the 440 block is good for around 600 hp or so but has a much weaker webbing than a 72 to 74 400 which in my view necessitates a girdle as the 440 block is quite tall and has a tendancy to crack the main journal webbing. The 400s also make great strokers and will flat out smoke a 440 due to lighter internal weight, hope this helps, happy holidays all.

on the 440 use a 1969 to 1974 block, these have the higher alloy content and have an extra strengthing rib running down the side. try to find a good block with .525 thick main webbing around the shell. most 440s have .375 . hope this helps.

You don't need any kind of swap mounts, thats money wasted, take the mounts off of the 318 and they will bolt right up to the big block, both big block and small block have the same bosses on the block, put the engine right in, get b-body headers and go driving. My brother has a 64 plymouth savoy, had a wide block 318 we installed a 426 hemi, right back in the same location, same k-frame as your car.

In '71 after I got home from the Army, we stuffed a 440 Mag into my '64 Belvedere that had the old poly head 318. I can't remember exactly what we did for mounts though......With 2.73 rear screws she would get waaaaay up there over 135 ! And on bias ply tires....I have NO idea why I am still alive.......
