View Full Version : solid lifter & adjustment

I am new to solid lifters/adjusting... a little green on motors on some things. I noticed a sound that was almost like a dead cylinder only @ low rpm. I checked all electrical first & plugs & wires. Checked for vacumn leaks... so far, so good. Next, I pulled on valve cover off the BBC. It had a slight stumble off idle & the low-end/rpm was not right... it had a classic valve failure sound. It has Milodin roller intake rockers & one of them was too loose (Builder says both int/exh are .26) the poly-lock had come a little looose it was probably @ about .80 or more. I adjusted it back to .26 & inspected all the others for tolerance, they were ok. I am very new to adjusting valve lash... would above cause that much trouble? This is mainly a street car/toy. Sympton started @local cruise here when I went home. Anyone ever have those poly-locks come loose? I bought a remote starer switch too, that was a big help to check the valve tolerance. Any advise on adjusting solid lifters before I finish this job???? Thanks gentlemen.

A properly adjusted poly lock may sometimes work loose. However, it it does it again, I would look for a lobe failure issue...

Thanks TPorter. If it is a "lobe" issue, I guess I will be forced to learn ALOT more about internals /eng. building soon. This symptom I had sound par for the corse when it is loose? One valve being off that much makes for crappy idle/off idle & sound?

Yep, it only takes 1...

Poly locks suck. If you don't tighten them enough, they come loose. If you over tighten them, they break when the motor gets hot.

Buy a stud girdle and be done with it. MUCH easier to set valve lash and it ties everything together for strength.

I wondered about a girdle... the poly that came loose is one that I must have overtightened... it is a replacement I had to install. I think I will look at a girdle... it makes sense. Any do & don'ts? reccomendations?

Just make sure the engine is up to temp when you adjust them. After you do one side, usually have to warm it up again to do the other side....that is if you're slow like me.Competition Products has some good deals on girdles.Only place I could find that had some that would actually fit my Canfields.Ordered 3 other sets from three different people. All 3 sent the exact same girdles.Last two guys I told them what I had tried before, and didn't work and they sent those anyways. Do you know how much it sux to buy 3 sets of girdles, with 3 shipping charges and know you're getting screwed??ALOT  Nothing like having enough $$$ invested in wrong stud girdles to afford a good shaft system  Run the girdles. Can't do nothing but help, and you know they'll never wear out!A loose poly-lock floating around in a motor can quickly negate a couple hundred bucks spent on a good girdle  Peace of mind is nice, too.Good luck!

Mr.Olds48, I always enjoy your replies... thanks bud. I will probably have better luck scoring the girdles for a BBC. It has Crane/Mildonin rockers all w/ poly's. I haven't known the difference in the past to know better. I will warm it up good on the adjustment so I don't break another. I am amazed how one poly giving up tolerance can make it run so crappy in the low!! It is night & day....

stud girdles r a good idea but if u kno what ur doin poly locks do the same job for cheaper. i check mine after every serious race and have had none come loose. if u want to save money just snug them up, u dont ahve to tighten the piss out of them.

I think I tightened "the piss out of it"... then it broke. I replaced it, but probably did not tighten it enough... it came loose. LEARNING ABOUT RACE ENGINES IS LIKE TRYING TO KEEP A WOMAN HAPPY!!! HIGH MAINTAINANCE.... all the time. WOW.....

Olds 48 (Mr) You would have my vote... we could keep our guns, Gas would come down, liberals would scatter like sloppy lean pistons @9000 rpm. People would re-gain respect for our country... speed shops across the USA would have girdles for Canfeilds... with ZERO discrimination. Just think of it...Obama would HATE you. You got my vote "Mr Olds48"

instead of over tightening / torquing it- try some red lock tight- a couple drops will surprise you 8)
even with girdles-
it doesn't ware that fast that you would need to adjust it all the time

Good idea.... I should have thought of that before... Thanks!

buy a set of shaft rockers and be done with it!!!! crane even makes a decent set. i ran well over the 950lb max spring pressure without any problems. only thing i didn't like was all the shims needed under that stand, but after that i loved 'em. never any problems!! and easy to adjust!!

Rabbit: You gotta know this is my fist BBC, w/roller everything. Prior to this, all I had was SBC's that were more mild & hydralic.Having said this, I am new to all of this & learning as I go...which so far is good, but EXPENSIVE! Anyways, being green on valve trains, I am not sure I know exactly what shaft rockers are. I assume they are direct fit & lash is done by shims... I will look em up on the net or my catalogues. Gimmie some suggestions if you want. Thanks Bro!!

Link http://www.racingjunk.com/gallery/profile/172321/55596 on my racingjunk profile. Shaft rockers are the way to go. instead of being on a "stud" they “bolt” directly to the head and have a shaft go through the rocker. much stronger, no flex with high spring pressure, no guide plates needed, and no aggravating stud girdle needed.
Jesel and T&D are the most popular, but I bought the crane set because they were on sale. I liked them and they worked well even though I was way over thier max spring pressure rating of 950lb. the shims we had to use (go under the mount that the bolt goes through into the head) was used to get the rockers at the correct level to match the top of the valve. Once on, you never have to bother with again. It was just aggravating to have to shim so much. Check out the crane site. it has some good info and pics that may help. http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=4&prt=2147

this is something you may want to add to your next rebuild. more stable than stud rockers, but your not gonna see any faster times just by changing rockers. unless your breaking 'em like i was.

If I had NOTHING (rockers girdle etc) I would go with a shaft setup...since by the time you buy all the other stuff you have almost paid for the shaft rockers...but when you already have girdles guide plates and rockers...it's hard to justify the extra money in my opinion.

Sounds well worth the time & effort... not to metion peace of mind you get. I think it sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the links & info Rabbit!! BTW, the pic/truck on your profile is awesome. I have never seen that class before... it looks like totally different dynamics... looks fun.

thanks. mud racing / sand drags is different and most drag racing theories don't work well for us. Ask several mud racers a question and they'll tell you something different!! most people don't know much about us. almost every truck in my class is a 600+ ci motor. if you aren't in the 1,000 hp range ( 1 carb, no NOS) u might as well stay home!
Thanks

wish we could. no motor in it right now. parts are coming in, but still a little while before it's making enemies again!
it should be every bit of 1100hp when it's finished, then we can intimidate a little more!
