i bought a 1050 Barry Grant Alky Dominator Carb and i know NOTHING about carbs at all ( I allways run injection)... I had it up at the grove today and my first pass was a 9.63 at 139mph (very slow) with a lil 850 carb i was going 9.40's. any way the 2nd pass it went 9.57 at 140mph still slow but very unconsitant.... there was no temp build i left a 180 and went through the traps at the same temp... but the car poped like 4 times going down the track... no temp means it is fat but the popping means it lean right?
ok ill give some spect's jettin in carb is 160 front and 164 the back. The carb has bowl exstention's front and back.. aswell as jet exstentions (onley in back)...
car spects 69 Camaro 3100lbs with a 461 alum rod motor w/bb2 xtra heads..
in my head the jets sound low b/c my old nickerson carb had 177 to 185 jets....
Any Help would be great thanks

A really rich carb can give you lean conditions also. If it were mine I'd keep jetting it up untill it fell off in ET.. I'd start with 186's squared. I take it this car had a 850 alky carb on it ? If not did you change timing/plugs check float levels, pressure ? Just simple things to rule out.

Start at 190. BG list that as having 185's

Can a very lean carb give you rich conditions??? yes it was an 850 alky, i checked flot levels when i put carb on..

Not that i've seen if its lean its lean, but can be so rich it give you a lean condition. The BG may not be as good as your 850 was, BG is known for having very poor alky carbs.

poor alky carbs??? unconsittant? or slower or both
my barry grant is a dominator
and my 850 Nickerson isnt
and what you said about the lean trick that would me put my jetting lower than 160... that sounds low dont it?? the 186 idea you said earler sounded more like in the ball park b/c i remember carb jetting beieng from 178 to 190 NOT AS LOW A 160 and thats where im at right now...
lower # is leaner right?
on my inj (terminator) it's lower# is fatter.

Barry Grant has been known for both slow and inconsistent just like your seeing. If it were my setup I'd do this put the bigger jet in it, you might just be plain lean, putting a bigger jet in it will tell you fast if it slows down more and still has the pop you know its the wrong way if it picks up you went the right way. 160 jet is to low IMO, lower # is leaner just the opposite of the terminator. A good worked over smaller carb such as your 850 can be made to work better then a out of box carb more often then not. Just go up with it .. lean hurts parts !

I have to wonder, the fact that it had 160/164 to begin with, what the history is on it. I would pull it down and check #'s on metering blocks, all E-hole bleeds, main intermediate and idle bleeds and check booster hole diameter against BG's website I posted. Sounds like someone was doing some changing before you got it an have it all messed up. Otherwise send it to BG to check out.

Could you have some problems with the air bleeds to the bolsters?
It seems with your smaller carb, you are getting a better signal thru out the range, It is possible with the larger carb, you are not getting the top end signal correct. I am not sure on those carbs, we run Pro systems and they have changable bolster bleed jets.
the smaller the jet the more fuel you will flow ( Air Bleeds )
