is there big gains sealing the scoop to the carb? curently running 388 sbc vega 2300lbs 9.49@142mph the scoop is wide open on the bottom.

If it's unsealed, not really much use in having it, is there?

The whole idea is to get some 'natural' supercharging going on by ramming air into the carb.

Right now, all you have is a big parachute on the hood.

I have a 6 inch outlaw hood on my 67 camaro and i used foam that i cut out about 6 inches in the deeper parts and 4 inches elsewhere,,used some good emblem glue and get-er-done..

the cowl hood is designed to pull air down from the winshield across top of the motor..you need to channel the air to your carb..the foam or whatever you use will also help create a barrier from the carb sucking down the hot air from exhaust etcc..


a snorkle type scoop i would seal up 100 %..( i did on my vette)

In my opinion, big gains, no. But it's worth it anyway. When I first started sealing the scoop, I didn't pick up at all, but consistency definately improved. I assume because the engine wasn't getting hot air from under the hood....

here is a pic of the insulator pan i made for my 632ci...notice the escap holes on the duck tail out the back this keeps the scoop from blowing apart with 180 mph winds channling thru the scoop.

hey bjuice, is that a diverter? in front of the carb on the front inside of the scoop? does it help smooth the flow to the carbs?

yes ..that's what it is..a RAMP that feeds and diverts the air too the carbs creating a forced induction type situation...there has been some heavy reported gains in HP with the proper insulators pan set up..

same watered down version of how a blow thru supercharger works.
not to mention the isolation of engine heat from carbs.

I have a customer that was not running his scoop sealed and the insides on his engine was trashy every time I tore it down. I Finally made them seal the hood scoop. Bammo, next tear down engine was fairly clean. I have one now that refuses to use a hood scoop at all with an injected EFI engine. We will see what happens there.

It is my theory that a good hood scoop increases ambient atmospheric pressure levels.

on my s10 i took the head lites out and made a ram air system for it . which is actually better, hood scoop or ram air?

yea make a metal pan around your carb and with foam to seal
to hood that when it closes it seals and lets air in only at the scoop,
no parachute affect 8)

Is your scoop forward facing or the cowl induction hood that the pic shows?If it is a cowl hood I don't think you'll have any "parachute" problems.I'd seal it for engine temps just for good measure if it is a cowl hood
