i live on East coast and Never heard of him..but i bet many people on the West Coast has heard of Gene Fulton and Par racing engines located on the East Coast...if this tell you anything..
not saying he ( Sherman) is not a great engine builder....i would definatley check his local references meaning people who have had engines built by him..i would speak with a minimum of 5 references,if you can't find them..then RUN !..a motor is the quickest way to get burned in this business...trust me on this one..

I found an article about an engine he built, attached it here: It was published in Hot Rod Magazine.

He also has a website. Seems to be very well known. Joe Sherman Racing won the inaugural 2002 Popular Hot Rodding Engine Masters Challenge I'd say he is the real deal.

We have excellent engine builders that are on RJ all the time and you might want to consider one of them also...

live on East coast and Never heard of him

That is totally unbelievable.

There has been more written about Big Joe Sherman in Hot Rod, Car Craft, and Popular Hot Rodding magazines than just about anyone else on this planet.

Not only is he a friend of mine, I admired him as a young man by things I read in magazines about him. When he was with Vic Edlebrock as an Employee Big Joe owned a 1970 Green Chevelle named *Mean Green* that was to my knowledge the first full bodied Chevelle in the country to break into the 9's and that was back in early 1980 or late 1970's. That car and all the home brew tricks he did for aerodynamcs was a huge inspriation for me.

Big Joe is more recently known for his many different varietes of SB Chevys over the years and what he did with them on a budget. I can't think of any one person who may have built more SB engines than he has.

No' I have never owned an engine from him or any other builder. I think I can stand my ground with anyone there as far as what I can do for the dollar spent.

I do talk on the phone from time to time with him and if you are near his area, by all means use his expertise if it is in your budget, He will take care of you and when it is all over you will probably have more told to you by him than you can possibly remember about why he recommends what he does. If you are buying an engine to be shipped, I will toot my own horn as being pretty fair as a builder and to be fair to you, also Bill Hendrens Hendrens Racing, also Ron at rlmotorsports
here on Racing Junk, and Frank with Advanced Engines, amongst others to do you good and treat you fair.

Big Joe is one of the All Time Greats in Hod Rodding.

Totally Unbelievable ? ummmmmmm

in all fairness Guys..I do not or have not..read the magazines mentioned above..thats probably the reason i have never heard of him ? :?:   ..ya think ?.....somewhat believebable ..huh ?

this still tells ME NOTHINNG of buying a engine from him,or the customer service to follow...sorry ?

Plus when you have the engines builder (s) we have here locally..CA is probably the last place most of us (East Coast) would go to have a motor Built..for obvious reasons.

No doubt this man has credentials...but i will still stick with My policy in that i personally would speak ( try) to 5 people who have Purchased
and ran his motors...(many reasons here)....its just good business..

Pat Musi is also a well known name..maybe some of you remember on here back a year or so ago where a customer of Pats claimed numerous problems he had with a purchase of an egine from Pat...mainly customer service invloving some PARTS mis-representation..Do not know if this is true or not..but if i have 5 or 6 people giving me the same type of story, then there must be a problem somewhere...

this is the kind of stuff Magazines and past reputations DO NOT tell you..
this is by no means to dis-credit ANY engine builder including Ed Sherman..its just good business..and if the person selling you the engine is trully straight on all edges with Nothing to hide then they will WELCOME your inquiry with providing you names of people that run their stuff....

ET7333. You made the right call getting on here and inquiring about the man....these days a person needs to be real careful when spending their hard earned money..Anyone that has anything to say about that then shame on them......Just pull up all the engines/motors for sell on RJ..If your wondering How good they are Just as them.."THEY WILL TELL YOU"

My opinion here...Bootm line it doesn't cost to be too careful,,no matter who your dealing with...again My opinion Only.

I have been dealing with Joe Sherman in CA for 20 years, I live on the East coast and when I first started drag racing I came across alot of articals in various mags that detailed his engine/car builds and his combinations always made big HP. I decided to call him one day and HE answered and patiently helped me with all my questions about a 383 SBC I was building. He sold me a cam and my engine ran some great #s. Through the years I bought some ported heads, a shortblock and more cams but never a complete engine. Every single time I have called his shop HE still answers the phone and he still takes the time to talk HP. Joe Sherman is a VERY educated engine builder and his combos always run great. I wouldn't hesitate one sec to buy an engine from this guy!!
