discs on rear drums on front will it work??

I am in the process of tubbing my car,and have gotten to the point where I need to figure out what to do with my brakes.The car is a '48 Olds.Had a 10 bolt in it before and was running stock '74 Nova on the rearend.Front end is still bone stock '48 with drums.Got a 9" in it now.I am planning to go discs on all four corners eventually.But for now,would it hurt to go ahead and buy a disc brake setup for the rear and leave the drums up front?Do ya'll think it would act stupid when I go to stop?

That's the same idea I had.You know rails only run rear brakes anyways.Of course they don't weigh 3000 lbs either :roll:

Last time I wieghed it she was 3125.That was with 2 full NOS bottles,Full 16 gallon fuel cell,and one battery.Since then I have backhalved it,added a 10 point cage,lost the NOS,went with aluminum heads,lost the inner fenders,went to plexiglass windows.Don't know what it will weigh now,but I know just the side windows and rear glass wieghed 78lbs.And my windows are tiny,about 14" tall!!!I'm trying to get down to that Ranchero wieght category

Thanks gasalley.Very cool site I didn't know about.Their kits only go back to a 49 Chevy,though.See,my car has kingpins whereas 49 and up went to spindles.WORD OF CAUTION----40'S MODEL OLDSMOBILE'S ARE A AFTERMARKET NO-MANS-LAND :evil: .Suits me fine,see less of them that way.Thanks anyways,still is gonna come in handy.

Hey guys,thanks for all the help so far.What I was wondering,was if it would work to run rear discs with front drums.I can get a rear disc setup easy and fairly cheap and go ahead and hit the track.If I redo the front(which I don't really have money for right now) I'll have to hold off for awhile :( .So,do ya'll think it will work okay,or be a handful to stop?

I think it might work, if you use an adjustable proportioning valve and the right residual pressure valves ( 10 psi in front & 2 psi in rear ). Put the proportioning valve in the front line w/ the 10 psi valve, adjust propostioning valve so that disc start to brake before the drums. This works in street rods, but just in reverse. You can get it all from the Speedway website. There is a diagram in their catalog that might help, just do it backwards for your Olds.

I forgot to mention that I am running 33x16x15 Goodyears out back.That is why I am concerned.I don't know if it will feel "mushy" with alot of braking force acting on that big of a tire.

I dont think I would recomend that setup....most of the braking is done on the fronts and if you adjust the pop valve to keep the rears from locking up, it will take a little longer to stop the car....
I would suggest hold out a little longer for the fronts... or put discs on the front and use drums on the back for now....

I was afraid of that ,too.Choke down the rears to prevent locking up,might as well run drums.Probably will end up running all drums for now.Stopped okay like that before.I'm only hitting right at 100 mph in the 1/8.Track has a short shutdown though :(

8)just re-read what I wrote and I made a mistake. the front brakes need to come on first, so the proportioning valve needs to be in the rear line to keep the rear disc from coming on to soon.
