im thinking some of the bbc truck blocks had thick cylinder walls.3999289 has one of the thickest ...... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY-CORVETTE-454-ENGINE-BLOCK-3999289-HIPERF-4-BOLT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ140682QQihZ013QQit emZ230198047790QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW ....i believe some of the truck blocks can be bored to 4.375 safely!!!something like that if your on a budget.if your gonna keep around for long time and can afford it id recommend an aftermarket block, then you dont take the chance of a used block being cracked,or otherwise someone elses junk!if you shoot for 700 hp as a goal in a 496 or larger motor you shouldnt have many problems...i remember reading about 496 combos making 700 hp on premium pump gas like back around 2002.with a 300 shot of nitrous whoaaaa1000 hp yee hawww!!!bbc stuff is getting so reasonably priced now a days!im thinking you can get a unassembled dart shortblock 540 for about $3500.check ebay or racingjunk.the bigger the motor the easier it will be to make power!torque is what pushes a car down the road(if you can hooker up!!!)cylinder heads are also reasonably priced nowadays,if i was to do it again id buy a cast head then take to engine builder for porting and assembly of good matched components.good luck!!!remember bigger is definatly better!!!

On another site (chevelles.com) Tony Mamo (the lead head guy at AFR) just posted about a motor very similar to what you are after. Here is a rundown and then the post.

540 CID Shortblock (Eagle rotating assy w/ JE/SRP pistons).
315 AFR heads (I did some light porting) w/ tulip valve angle milled to provide 11.0 to 1 CR
Vic Jr. Intake with a good gasket match and clean-up in the plenum
Holley 950 HP carb (4150 style)
Custom Comp cam (solid roller) 256/256 @ .050, .680 lift 112 LSA installed at a 109 ICL
ATI Harmonic Balancer
2.125 Headers....(not sure about the other exhaust components).

644 RWHP
620 RWTQ

If you assume a 18% loss through the driveline, that puts it around 750 at the motor. I realize that there was a little porting done on those 315's but I still think you would be over 700 pretty easily with the Fully CNC'd 315's out of the box on that combo.
