I am selling my 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z which has been raced in Lemons. This car comes with the 1988 2.2L (TII) turbo'd engine with intercooler. I've raced this car twice at MSR Houston and once at Eagles Canyon. After our last race in Houston, I completely rebuilt the engine including sending it out for block and head machining. The rebuild has maybe 100 miles on it mostly around the neighborhood, but a few break in runs up and down the freeway at high speeds to shake it all down. The car pulls hard and runs fine, but more on that later. The car has competed in Class C with Lemons, and in the right hands, can be a legitimate competitor.
During the rebuild I replaced: crank, rods, pistons, valves, springs, oil pump, bearings, etc.
In addition to the rebuild, the following parts/mods have been completed:
-Professionally built custom cage by Apex Auto Works (Alvin, TX)
-Kirkey racing seats w/ belts (2 sets)
-PT valve lifters (better throttle response)
-Baffled oil pan and opened/polished oil pump ports
-Oil temp sensor and gauge (gauge wired up but not installed)
-Oil cooler wired & tubed up (not installed, but a core is included)
-Relocated intercooler to make room for the much larger radiator from the NA version of the car
-Stainless steel braided brake lines
-Aftermarket oil pressure gauge installed
-Wired up with a bung installed for AFR gauge (installed AEM Failsafe gauge will be removed prior to sale)
-Wired and tubed up for aftermarket boost gauge (included loose)
The sale price includes all new/used spare parts along with original equipment, including:
-Block & head
-Spare pistons (used), con rods (used), and rings (new)
-Crankshafts (one new and one used, but can be reground)
-New valves and springs
-Timing, power steering, and two alternator belts
-Oil pressure sensor
-Steering wheel bushing
-Misc. gasket kits
-Spare wheel hubs
-Front calipers and pads
-Vacuum block and fittings (kit not installed)
-Misc new and used parts (including used tires)
As I mentioned, the car has been raced a few times, but there is very little time on the rebuild. The only problem I am aware of it is that there is a head gasket leak. The car has never overheated since the rebuild, so something probably happened when I put the top end together. Again, it starts on first crank, handles very well at speeds, and pulls hard across the rev range.
Finally, the car itself is insured and has a transferable title (bonded) in Texas and has Antique plates, so it can be driven on public streets (with certain restrictions) – but I wouldn’t count on driving it far without catching attention.
I am selling everything together, but the car sells for $500 with all other safety gear and parts selling for $3,300. You will also get all the original interior trim including factory seats, gauges, etc; so you can sell them as you see fit. I also have door glass and the original hatch which will sell with the car. I can’t find it right now, but I think I have a spare ECU somewhere also – which if I can find it will go also.
In closing, if you want to get your own ride for budget endurance racing - this is a good start. I've done a lot of the hard work on this one, getting it caged, finding spare parts, etc. so take it from here and make it yours then dominate Class C!
