50 YEARS ON ON-TRACK RACING, 1959 to 2009
Buzz Fyhrie is the complete road racer. In the ultimate man and machine racecar interaction, Fyhrie combines his skill, perception and judgement with an excellent knowledge of the mechanical and engineering intricacies of a sophisticated racing car. As a driver, racecar chassis setup and racecar engine builder Buzz has done it all. Including competing in every kind of road racing event imaginable. From his first exposure to racing with
Go-Karts in 1959 and winning a Karting International National Championship in 1962 with the trophy presentation from Hot Rod Magazine, to a brief try at drag racing, to Autocross & Speed Events, to Midwest Council of Sports Car Club’s “A” Production Champion in 1971, to twice racing in the IMSA 24-Hours of Daytona in 1975 & 1976, to finishing 5th in “A” Production at the 1976 SCCA Road Atlanta National Championship Runoffs, to racing in eight seasons of the SCCA TRANS-AM series from 1976 to 1983, The IMSA Firehawk Series in 1987 to more recent PBOC and NASA events in Florida. All combined it adds up to a resume of more than 50 years of on-track amateur and professional racing experiences. Along the way Buzz has also been an instructor for the Midwest Council of Sports Car Clubs & for the SCCA.
Fyhrie now lives in Plantation, Florida. He has been involved in racing for most of his life. In addition to his automobile racing career, Buzz's background includes a career as an Electrical Design Engineer for Bell Labs designing printed circuit boards and integrated circuit chips for Electronic Switching Systems. In '71 Sales Manager for Dan Gurney’s Checkpoint America. It later became Motor Sport Research. In '75 Fyhrie became a racing engine builder and the National Sales Manager for Pro-Motor Engineering. PME was a Chicago co. building Chev racing engines to teams involved with National racing series inc: TRANS-AM, CAN-AM, NASCAR & APBA boats. Buzz's engines powering boats, which won 3 APBA World Champs & along the way also won 40 Nat races. Pro Motor Eng, in NC, is one of the premier engine builders for NASCAR teams with customers inc teams & drivers as Ricky Rudd, Todd Bodine, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Jimmy Spencer, etc.
Buzz is President & owner of Performance Marine Associates Insurance Services, Inc. a Ft. Lauderdale, FL based insurance agency for yachts, hi-performance boats and insurance for race car teams on a national basis. '09 marks Buzz’s 21st year in the insurance business. Drawing from his offshore racing background Buzz developed PMA's business of insuring high-performance boats, cruiser & large mega-yachts. Buzz’s agency writes insurance for Cigarettes, Scarabs, Thunderbird Formulas, Fountains. The agency is also a supplier of insurance for clients cruising in the Caribbean, the South Pacific & for worldwide cruising yachts along with insurance coverage of Motoryachts & Sailboats throughout the US.
Buzz's interests include cruising on his Harley, snow skiing, playing drums, scuba diving, sailing in the Caribbean, racquetball, photography, and racing video movie-making. His movies include most of the auto races he has participated in, with in-car footage taken during the races.
