Television coverage leads with one of racing’s biggest events worldwide, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, that will take the green light this Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. EDT on FOX Sports 1 and will continue until the next morning with FOX Sports 2 sharing the programming.
The last 14 years have seen Audi team dominate this 24-Hour race taking the title in 12 of those years. Last year’s winners Dane, Tom Kristensen, Briton, Allan McNish, and Frenchman, Loic Duval, who survive a vicious practice crash on Wednesday, drove their Audi R18 e-tron Quattro to the checkered flag last year. This year, it appears that Toyota and the return of Porsche to the series could be a viable counter to the Audi Le Mans sweep in these now hybrid state-of-the-art racing machines.
NASCAR has its three premier divisions in action this weekend with the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series at the Michigan International Speedway. The Cup drivers qualify at 3:30 p.m. EDT on Friday on FOX Sports 1 and the Nationwide teams qualify on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
The Ollie Bargain Outlets 200 NASCAR Nationwide race airs at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN. On Sunday, the Sprint Cup series coverage is shared with FOX Sports 1 starting at 11:00 a.m. followed by Countdown the Green on TNT at noon with the Quicken Loans 400 starting at 1 p.m. EDT.
NASCAR has the Sprint Cup series rejoicing with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. winning last weekend in Pocono, taking his second win of the season and pretty much guaranteeing him a spot in the Sprint Cup Championship Chase.
At Michigan, it’s a matter of pride. With Ford and Chevrolet headquarters just miles away, the Irish Hills see Brad Keselowski bringing prominence to the blue oval camp in his Penske ride after running strong last weekend at Pocono only to suffer from overheating problems caused by grill debris. His teammate, Joey Logano is equally as fast.
The Roush-Fenway Racing corporate offices are also nearby and will try to defend its Michigan spring race title as Greg Biffle won last year’s race. Teammates, Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse will be out to impress all the Ford execs at the race.
Chevrolet will be led by the Hendrick Motorsports and the Stewart-Haas organizations. Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harrick, Kurt Busch and Dania Patrick will likewise be out to run strong with all General Motors officials on-site. Richard Childress Racing with Ryan Newman and rookie candidate, Austin Dillon will be an additional arm to the GM camp. The Ganassi-Sabates team can still surprise everyone on Sunday with Jamie McMurray and prime rookie leader, Kyle Larson running strong.
The Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth are good and after seven wins in 2013 for Kenseth, he’s overdue to add his name to the Sprint Chase list of 16 winners.
The Nationwide series is showing competitive as ever. As the summer stretch continues, point leader, Regan Smith has his JR Motorsports Chevy in the lead with a four-point separation over Elliott Sadler of the Joe Gibbs Racing operation. Fan sensation and JRM teammate of Smith, Chase Elliott is close in third behind by 22 points. Roush-Fenway’s Trevor Bayne with a good Ford showing on Saturday at Michigan could move up being behind by only 27 points.
Of course, you can never leave out Kyle Busch in his Gibbs Racing Toyota as a likely frontrunner along with Kyle Larson in a Chevy. Earnhardt, Jr. will be making one his rare Nationwide appearances. The RCR Chevys with Brian Scott, Ty Dillon, and Brendan Gaughn could be major story for the bow-tie bunch. Joey Logano will be piloting the Penske Ford Mustang for the race.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to the Gateway Motorsports Park for the Drivin’ for Crewmen 200 on Saturday with qualifying at 5 p.m. on FOX Sports 2 and at 8 p.m. on FOX Sports 1 starts this race.
Without Kyle Busch on the St. Louis entry list, who has four wins in six races, now have all eyes on the NCWTS points leader Matt Crafton, who should be a likely contender to take the flag, but you can never count out Johnny Sauter, Ron Hornaday, Jr., or Ryan Blaney. The last time NASCAR raced at Gateway was in 2010.
The NHRA starts coverage of the Ford Thunder Valley Nationals on Friday with live coverage of the second Pro qualifying session on ESPN3.com starting at 7:30 p.m. EDT. Saturday will conclude qualifying with a show at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. Sunday’s race will be live on ESPN3.com at 12 noon or wait until it’s re-aired on ESPN2 starting at 11 p.m.
The NHRA is entering the first of four in a row this weekend at the Ford Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. With Top Fuel contenders, Doug Kalitta, Antron Brown and Shawn Langdon leading the pack, it will be interesting to see how the Kalitta Motorsports, Don Schumacher Racing and Al-Anabi Racing teams handle the adjusted elevation in the Great Smokies. In Funny Car, Robert Hight is running away with the lead over his father-in-law and car owner, John Force. Kalitta Motorsports teammates, Alexis DeJoria and Del Worsham are in close proximity. Cruz Pedregon is the hottest driver on tour winning at Englishtown and running in qualifying the quickest NHRA Elapsed Time in Funny Car history of 4.959 seconds.
Pro Stock is led by the lady; Erica Enders-Stevens in her Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro with the Mopar Brigade of Jeg Coughlin and Allen Johnson in their Dodge Darts running in hot pursuit. KB Racing’s Jason Line and Vincent Nobile are racing just as strong in their Chevys. Greg Anderson is currently 13th in the points and after two final round appearances since his heart surgery has this driver heading to the Mello Yello Countdown for the Championship. You can never rule out starting line leaver, Dave Connolly or Shane Gray of Gray Racing. The Pro Stock motorcycles are an all-Harley-Davidson show right now with Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec displaying their strength on the quarter-mile.
ARCA’s Corringan Oil 200 will be on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. on FOX Sports 1.
ARCA is racing at Michigan International Speedway with Grant Enfinger leading the points with Mitchell Mason in second. Veteran campaigner, Frank Kimmel is third and has been running solid all year.
Those schedules are great–may I suggest you include some of the internet streaming also—the LeMans streaming was so much better than that of Fox.
