Lucas Oil 2014 MLRA Spring Nationals This Weekend

After a stellar opening weekend, the Lucas Oil MLRA quickly jumps back into action this Friday and Saturday, April 11 & 12 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri for the Fox 22 Spring Nationals Presented by RacingJunk.com. The two day race will award $2,000 to Friday night’s winner and $3,000 to Saturday’s victor, while RacingJunk.com will choose a Hard Luck Award winner for the drivers afflicted with the worst luck.

The unfortunate recipients from the season opener were Scott Lewis on Saturday night and Don Shaw on Sunday.  Scott Lewis broke a power steering pump and had to go to a back up car for the next night. Don Shaw had a good starting spot on Sunday in the main event and spun out causing a big wreck and had to go to the back of the field for the restart.

Last week’s race winner in the Greenwood, Nebraska season opener, Terry Phillips, was class of the field with a new car with a Hatfield Engine motor, and DirtonDirt.com Pole Award winner Tommy Weder, Jr came in a strong second.

This weekend, look for Mt. Vernon, Iowa’s Chad Simpson, who is currently second in the standings. The two time winner of the April stop at Lucas Oil Speedway will be back, looking to continue his strong start to the year and gain valuable track time prior to the 22nd Annual Lucas Oil Show Me 100 over Memorial Day weekend.

However all bets are off for Simpson this time, as a switch to Rocket Chassis will provide an entirely new set of challenges. “The track is unique in that I drive it different than any other place we race,” Simpson shared. “It gets really slick, and once I made the switch in my approach we have been much better.”

Simpson has also begun working with young up and coming driver Spencer Diercks from Davenport, Iowa. The relationship resulted in an engine program switch to Tezar Racing Engines, which are known for exceptional performance out of their Ford based program.

“We’re going to have to throw away all of our notes and start over, but I bet we can get it pretty close,” continued Simpson. “We’re really excited about coming down, and the two day format works really well for us. The Diercks family’s help has been big for our team. We couldn’t do it without all of our partners. I’m hopeful we can knock down a win or two this weekend.”

This will be the only chance for Super Late Models to compete at Lucas Oil Speedway prior to the 22nd Annual Lucas Oil Show Me 100.  There will be a three hour practice session Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 PM. Grandstand entry will be free.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with hot laps starting at 7:00 p.m.
