Default 95 plymouth sohc neon

i recently bought a 95 plymouth sohc neon to turn into a race car and the guy before me replaced every gasket on the motor and put a bigger intake on it. when i bought it it wouldnt rev up past 3,000rpm so i put all the stock parts on it and it seems to run better but nothing like it should always got to be on the gas to keep it running. so i did a compression test on it and cylinder 1 had 150 #2 didnt make the gauge go up high enough to read anything. #3 did the same as #2 and #4 had 150. i cant seem to find the problem. does it need to be retimed? timing belt? or is the motor junk? PLEASE help me figure out what is wrong[/b]

Have you done a cylinder leakdown check? Sounds like ahead gasket between Number 2 & 3 cylinders.

I don't know YB, most sohc engnes don't have lash adjustments.

I read this on another forum.

no the sohc does not have adjustable lash, the only thing you can do is buy a new set of rockers to help quiet valve noise down. The lifters/lash caps are built into the rockers on the sohc

Zip.

Do the valves open and close on the center cylinders? The cam may have wiped a couple lobes. A cylinder leakdown test would be the easiest way to troubleshoot it. JMO

Did you have the head checked for warpage or cracks while you had it off? Those motors are NOTORIOUS for blown head gaskets and warped heads. If its warped or cracked between those 2 center cylinders all it does is let the compression bleed back and forth between the pistons.
