Default Need a better starter for a 383 SBC

I have a 383 SBC chevy with 12.5:1 compression. Occasionally, not often, I forget to turn off ignition before cranking and sometimes the motor kicks back. I am on my 2nd "life time warranty" starter from the parts store.

Will the gear drive starters last better? Is a big block starter the same or are they better? Anyway, I would like to get a starter that would take a bit more abuse.

Any help is appreciated.

A gear reduction starter will work much better. Depending on how much advance you are running, it might be worth installing a starter saver that kicks the timing back 20 degrees while you are cranking it.

Default Starter

Here is a cheap fix for the Chevy starter blues. The starter is fine usually, but the solenoid gets hot and can't get enough amperage to crank the engine fast enough.
