Default Oval vis-a-vis Rectangular Ports

Are there any real performance differences between the above on a bbc?

NO !

It's all just hype on a conventional BBC head, .. the port is too close to the deck
to make use of any real oval port designs. Most of the current oval
port heads like the Edelbrock / Musi or the Brodix are mostly
just oval at the gasket and return to a semi oval in the port.

Good oval port design has to follow the oval port through the entire port
all the way to the valve to make any real benefit. look at SB2.2, oval
port big chief or any raised runner head. Good oval ports have to get the
port entry at least 2" off the deck.
