Bluebaugh Racing’s Team AutoTrader qualified number one and ran to the Semi’s at the Pacific Street Car Associations Arizona National’s this past weekend, September 26th- 28th, 2008. Crew Chief Deborah Woodard said, all season long we have been trying to get the AutoTrader Monte Carlo back in the 6.40’s. One year ago, the car ran a 6.47 @ 220 mph in Fontana and it seems we have been chasing the number all year to no avail. This weekend was finally our time and a personal victory as the team has been working hard to bring the car back around. Bluebaugh qualified the AutoTrader Monte Carlo in the number one position with a 6.486 @ 220.48 mph on what proved to be the toughest track to navigate this season. The Phoenix area has been showing some unseasonably warm weather and racers battled track temperatures up to nearly 140 degrees over the racing weekend, which made track preparations difficult. Most of the Pro Street class met challenges with tire shake and extreme variations in a changing track surface between morning and mid afternoon runs. This was no exception for Bluebaugh and the AutoTrader team as tire shake problems in the second and third qualifying rounds prevented efforts to duplicate the earlier run. Woodard said, additionally, we have still been battling an aggressiveness problem with our new clutch making prediction of the tune up for the clutch somewhat problematic. In round one, Bluebaugh caught a broke bye and chance to test after Randy Hagerty unfortunately tapped the wall in qualifying the day before. The AutoTrader Monte Carlo ran a 6.539 @ 217.39 skating a good bit on the big end, however the team felt the clutch problem was finally getting under control. In the Semi-final round, Bluebaugh met with the Petronix GTO of Clint Hairston for what was said to be the race Hairston owed to Bluebaugh. Last month in Bakersfield, Bluebaugh drove away to an easy win over Hairston when his line lock failed and both agreed they had been cheated out of what was expected to be a great side by side showing. This time, it was Bluebaugh’s turn for broken luck. Unbeknownst to the team one of the cable’s for the fire system in the trunk compartment must have come loose with all the earlier tire shake. Shortly after launch, the cable let go releasing the contents of the fire system in the car and under the tires. Bluebaugh said he could hardly breathe as the car fish-tailed wildly just barely crossing the centerline at one point. Bluebaugh cut an .008 light to Hairston’s .050 giving him a good jump at the start with every advantage to take the win. The two teams will have to wait for yet another time to pair up for a real heads up race. Bluebaugh Racing and Team AutoTrader will be in Sacramento to compete in the West Coast Hot Rod Association season finals October, 3rd-5th, 2008.
