It would depend on several different things.
Crankshaft;
Maximum horsepower.
Budget.
What rods would be used.
Oddly I prefer the factory 400 cranks for all but the highest horsepower applications. I have used them in over 800 horse applications.
Next would be the Eagle 4340 cranks
Next would be the Callies if not the Howard. Howard is less money.
Rods;
Eagle H-beam with standard bolts.
Eagle H Beam with ARP 2000 bolts.
Lunati Pro Mod Rods.
Why Eagle instead of another brand? I am an Eagle Dealer. A Scat Dealer would prefer Scat.
I hate the Cast Steel Crankshafts from everyone selling them.
On a tight budget 383;
Factory 400 crank cut down or a forged steel 5140 crank.
Factory 400 5.565 rods with ARP 190,000 psi or at the least Pioneer or Milodon 180,000 psi rod bolts and nuts.
Any piston for a 350 chevy with a stock compression distance of 1.560
Cheap. decent and capable of surprising power.
Be sure to balance full assembly.
