Just wondering i have a 496 bbc with dart heads and 13:1 comp whats the best way to turn into a motor i can afford to drive on street? or easier to start over i have it in a pulling truck and will prob get out in a few years just wondering thanks

i would sell it, and start over.

would you have to change pistons? or is there spacers? OR IS IT JUST NOT WORTH IT?

That's too much compression for pump gas. So yes, you'd have to change pistons to lower the compression. If ya do that, then comes changing the cam to work with the lower compression. It kinda comes down to how quick you want to put this on the street. If your not in a big hurry and have the time to try and sell what you have, then that would be the way to go. If you want to do it now, then make the changes on your 496. JMO

If your Dart heads are too big for street use, then sell the motor. Another option would be to sell Dart heads and get something more suitable for the street if they are too big, the pistons, and cam. This way you could use your block, crank, and rods. It all depends on your own personal preference. JMO :D

they are dart iron 308's but i guess i could get about the same money out of that motor than a streetable motor would cost also? what is suitable comp for pump gas?
|
That would be a good head for the street. I would say 9.5 to 9.75 with 92 gasoline. I would just change the pistons and cam. JMO What are you running for an intake?

holley strip dom know anybody that needs some .60 over je pistons and a 714/714 doug hubert solid roller cam in a year or two? just kidding! or not

hold on a minute...check with a top notch head guy and see how much those chambers can be opened up on those heads combined with a thick head gasket you might can get it close enough to run on the street with some 110 and 93 mixed.
i mean you want a good running street engine that has some pep..not a slug..right ?..i have run 11:1 street engines..and they ran GREAT...RAN 110 and 93 mixed. i have always said if a man is stretched for running decent gas for his Hotrod, then he might want to re-consider Hotroding and take up chess playing.. i am poking at ya a little but on the other side i am serious also. check into the head work before diving in head 1st |
I'd just run the race gas and back the timing off a little...no way would I eat the cost of the motor if I wanted to use it again later
