How much to assemble a 383

What is the going rate from a reputable engine builder to assemble a sbc 383 long block including clearancing for stroker, checking all clearances, rod bolt stretch, piston to valve, degreeing cam, install cam bearings, soft plugs, oil restricters, etc?

do you have all the parts or does the machinist need to supply anything

It could be anywhere from $500.00 to $1,500 if all parts fit and extra machine work is not needed and if parts are compatable. Those are some big ifs. If you were near me, I would give you a flat rate of $1,000 plus mark up on any parts and plus any extra machine work. That price does include any stroker clearancing needed, on block pistons and rods. but is not including any parts I.E. Small Base circle cam bearings, plugs, freeze plugs, main or rod bearings, timing sets, cam, rings etc. It does include fitting rings with a Ring Machine. It does include all labor to get any clearances where they should be.

You might be able to find someone to assemble (throw together) the parts you have if all prior machine work has been completed for $500. I can't see anyone charging less.

I agree with ED here, there's just too many variables in this question. If you brought me every piece needed to assembly the engine i might consider it for $1,000.00 but you don't mention is it balanced already, are the rods alum. if so they have to be clearanced for the cam even a small base circle and there goes the balance. In my opinion if you find someone who knows what they are doing it will cost a min. of $1,000.00 but most likely more and i have CNC equipment available to do the stroker clearanceing.
