Tall Deck 427 ??? Any Good ???
 

I'm not much of a mechanic, so I'll just ask a silly question. I found a complete tall deck 427 Chevrolet (suposedly it runs good) Anyway, are they worth anything, or are they boat anchors??? Thanks for any input. :?: :roll:

Make sure it is not a 366. The 366 is junk.

You can have some fun with the old 427.

If thats an old truck engine I wouldn't use the pistons that are in it,they are the 4 ringed pistons,junk as far as I am concerned,the 4 ring pistons

as stated, tall deck 427s were/are truck blocks. Dont use the pistons and i seem to remember the head ports were quite small, but these blocks can make a nice street motor, or these days with all the goodies you can buy for them, an excellent race motor.
If what you found is indeed just a truck motor, then do not use it in stock form, it needs to be gone over...

if it is a truck tall deck 427 then you can take and install a 4.25 stroke bbc crank and stock 454 pistons then run a 6.385 rod i think . hopefully someone will correct me if needed. a friend of mine built one with stock .30 over 454 pistons a 4.25 crank and either stock lenth rods or 6.385 rods and it worked great . it save him lots of cash to not have to buy 496 pistons. makes a nice 500 cube engine

My opinion is that it is a great low cost base for a strong stroker engine. You can easily install a 4.250 stroke crank with not a lot of grinding. You can install a 4.375 crank with more grinding for clearances. Guys that are good have put 4.50 strokes in them but that is trickey to do.

You can use a 454 4.00 crank by grinding some and by using a set of 6.385 rods Corrected by DCarr. It is in fact the 6.535 rod. you can use a factory 454 piston.

That block is cpable of 427 - 433 - 440 - 452 - 454 - 461 - 477 - 482 - 496 - 509/510 - and up to 540 cu inches.

It was THE HARD CORE RACE block in the older days, before Dart, World etc. The block will handle a ton of hp with only minor block prep. I mean well over 1,000 hp and I have seen them live at 1,400 hp after they were fully prepped and filled.

Can you believe all the garbage I just wrote. I find it hard to believe too, but I have done it many times.

It is .400 taller than the standard block. iT was the first 10.200 block.

Are you guys sure its a 6.385 rod w/ stock piston and not a 6.535" ?

.400" taller deck would require a .400" longer rod ...........................

I recently ran one that was .125" over w/ 4.250 stroke

I RUN A 427 TALL DECK IN MY MUDRACE TRUCK W/454 CRANK& PISTONS W/6.985 ALUM. RODS . THIS MOTOR IS A SCREAMER,IF I WAS YOU I WOULD GET THE MOTOR YOU CAN DO A LOT WITH THIS BLOCK. I ALSO WOULDN'T USE THE ORIGINAL HEADS ,USE SOME 990 HEADS OR SOME GOOD ALUM. HEADS.I'M USING AFR CNC HEADS AND HAVE NO COMPLAINTS.

Make sure to buy the correct intake, one for a 10.2 tall deck block.
