removing old filter

this is a little off base for this forumbut i need help... i have a slide back car carrier and has hydraulics. the filter for the hydraulic fluid has been on the chassis for way too long and DOES NOT want to loosen up. anyone out there tell me a good way to get this filter off without ruining the parts around it. it is a regular size filter just like a chevy oil filter thanks art

try using a band type. not the metal band, but the one with the square pipe and cloth band. you can use a 1/2" breaker bar and extension if needed to loosen it. i've used one on some really tight filters on tractors at work.

If you can drive a BIG screwdriver or steel pry bar straight threw it and break it loose

I've even done it with a piece of a seat belt wrapped around the filter and an extension bar. Shove a power bar or rachet on the end and away ya go.

I had one that everything seemed to fail at. The body of the filter ripped and I finally had to use a cold chisel at the base of the body and tapped it loose. The rubber seal stayed on the block and I scraped it off with a putty knife. Fortunately there was enough room to tap it loose.

make sure to grab it close to the base--you have alot better bite because it won't crush as easy

X2 on the seat belt method, works well!

stuck filter

thanks guys i am probably going to have to use the cold shisel method like one of our members suggested. this baby is tight and i dont want to rip the filter housing off the bracket and hoses by trying to strong arm the filter with a strap. thanks art

I'd go ahead and rip the filter. The only reason I used the chisel was because the area was open and I didn't have to worry about hurting the block. If your tear the filter housing off, it exposes a large area to get the chisel on.

yea i used a chisel, tapped a indention and just lightly tapped it
lose, my son was amazed, cause the channel locks had twisted
the filter like taffy, he laughed and said, "one of your old school
tricks oldman", ( i did'nt tell him i sprayed some silicone)
