'89 firebird setup

My college son just bought a '89 firebird drag car. It has a mild sbc, 700R trans, (no brake), 2400 stall, 4:11 posi gear, 28X10 slicks. The car will NOT hookup at all. I guess the previous owner liked smoke & squeeling tires. The car was a base model 6 cylinder, it has complete STOCK suspension, with the sbc the nose is low but it doesn't raise much when he leaves. Neither of us know much about race cars. We hope to work on the car over Christmas break. What improvements should we adress first, but keep his college budget in mind. I can weld & do minor fab work for him. It still has front & rear sway bars. Should we do : frame rails, torque arm, control arm bushings. different springs & shocks, roll cage, panhard rod, ???? Where do we start, I would like to get parts ordered for a 12 flat ET. Thanks for reading my "book"! Can anyone give us some direction or suggest a book. I read some 4 link stuff, but that's out of our league. Thanks to all, Ron (kadfarm)

Look into getting a set of lower control arm relocation brackets and upgrade the torque arm. The stock LCA angle is setup for driveability not hard acceleration and is prone to wheel hop. Midwest Chassis and Performance makes some nice products the will bolt right in. Otherwise BMR, UMI, Sphoon, and Madman Racing all have nice products. As set of subframe connectors is pretty much a must on any subframe car. The front sway bar is not helping with weight transfer and a set of adjustable front shocks would help. Just upgrading the suspension should lower the cars et. Unfortunatly there's not alot of info on seting up a TA suspension, you'll find all kinds of info on 4 links and ladder bars! As a basic understanding I'd recommend these books:
