Speedway Auto Mall, Machesney Park, IL
Two words that are virtually unheard of in motorsports are "financing available". A local banker simply glazes over when you walk in and want to borrow 12 large, for example, to buy a new race car.
You'll receive no such blank stares at Speedway Auto Mall Legend Cars, the Illinois-Wisconsin Legends Cars dealer.
"Unlike just about any other race car dealer, we offer financing as well as a full service shop with a complete line of products," said Jr. Eddie Mecum, the Owner of Speedway Auto Mall Legends Cars. "You can ride a bicycle in here and we can send you out with a race car, trailer, tow vehicle, safety gear and everything else you'll need to race."

Speedway Auto Mall, located in Machesney Park, Illinois, is owned and operated by Eddie Mecum and Eddie Mecum, Jr. They started racing in 1973 when they purchased two 440 Mini Indy cars. For the next three years, they manufactured, sold, serviced and raced these legends cars throughout the Midwest.
In 1975, the Mecums built two Buick Skyhawks, powered by V6 motors and built by Smokey Yunick, to compete in the Champion Spark Plug Series. The series was sponsored by Champion and put on by IMSA Racing. The series ran 10 to 13
races per year throughout the United States.
In both 1988 and 1989, the Mecums placed 1st and 2nd at the Watkins Glen 24 hours Endurance Race, which had a starting field of over 100 cars. They won the National Championship in 1989 and had many other 1st place wins at the other tracks-setting six new track records.
Business commitments took the Mecums out of legends car racing until 1998 when they attended a Legends cars show at Rockford Speedway in Rockford, Illinois. They then purchased two Legends Cars and did some limited racing. Thanks to Speedway Auto Mall’s service manager, Chris Carnes, who won the Semi-Pro National Dirt Championship in 1999 and the Pro National Dirt Championship in 2000, they were introduced to dirt racing.
The Mecums were approached in the summer of 1999 to assist the 600 Racing dealer in Wisconsin and Illinois to help with parts, sales and service of legends cars.
In September 1999, they were asked by 600 Racing President Mark Whittaker to represent them in the Illinois area-with legends cars, sales, parts, etc. Speedway Auto Mall accepted and had a very aggressive sales effort on the new and used car sales, plus a full rental and maintenance program, where the customer arrives at the track and the car is there for them ready to drive and enjoy. They will also conduct parts, service and repair maintenance seminars of legends cars over the winter. When the season opened in spring 2000, Speedway Auto Mall had several Ride & Drive Programs for all the three series-dirt, asphalt and road racing.
As the Mecums look back on all the years they’ve been racing, they sincerely feel that the Legends Race Series is the best place to be for the following reasons: Legends car racing can’t beat cost wise. Legends car are very family oriented and crowd pleasing, the drivers are excellent group of people to compete against and the competition is very close.
The Mecums look forward to meeting new friends and helping the Legends Cars Series grow in the Illinois/Wisconsin Market and beyond.
