NEW BIG BLOCK CHEVY 496 BLOCK-COMPONENT GROUP

For Super Class or bracket race applications using strokes of 4.250 or less, I preferred the OEM 9.800 Mark IV thick walled blocks to the aftermarket Merlin or Dart Blocks. With a 4.250 crank, a 1.125 pin height 4.310 piston can be used with a 6.535 rod length, yielding a 1.53 rod/stroke ratio, which is virtually identical to a 454.
A race prepared, fully poured OEM style block will weigh in 80 to 110 pounds LESS than an aftermarket iron block. 100 lbs. is a TENTH in et, plus or minus! Any advantage the aftermarket 540 gains in power is lost lugging the extra weight around. Overbore capacity is about the same (+.125) and in my experience, the cost to purchase and prepare a good OEM thick walled block was less. Converting to main studs and billet steel caps result in a strong and dependable high performance foundation for these applications.
