The Disaster of Deadly Emotions by Dr. Don Colbert

me share a dynamic fact that can totally transform your life and
health. How you feel in your heart can show up in your body, for your
heart and body are more powerfully connected than you have every

            It’s true. Your emotional
health is often mirrored in your physical health. Perhaps you’ve asked
your doctor to treat your pain when you would have been better off
dealing with the root problem – your deadly emotions.

When I walk into a room
where a patient is waiting, I often know more about what is causing that
person’s problems than what is revealed on the charts. The patient’s
attitude speaks volumes.

I have often thought, If a negative person can sap my energy, what must that attitude be doing to his or her own body?

            One patient who had
extremely negative outlook on life returned to my office about every two
weeks. I became convinced that her constant health problems were being
caused by her attitude. Her emotions were blocking her healing.

Once bad attitudes have developed, the next step is the formation of deadly emotions. Deadly emotions include

I go over all these deadly emotions in detail in my book What You Don’t Know May Be Killing you.

The Impact of Deadly Emotions

Deadly Emotions can also lead to
deadly behaviors that affect the lives of the people around us. Deadly
emotions always start in the mind with a thought. That thought leads to a
word, and the word leads to an attitude. In turn, these bad attitudes
lead to deadly emotions that become trapped in our bodies and set
disease in motion.

For example, Hatred and Jealousy

Hatred and jealousy can lead to:

-High blood pressure

-Migraine headaches

-Heart disease

When an individual experiences
excessive anger, worry and the stress caused by hatred, his or her
adrenalin level rises, blood pressure may increase, and a heavier load
is placed on the heart and circulatory system. The risk of heart disease
- especially heart attack – increased for those who live in attitudes
of anger. These individuals experience twice the risk of heart disease
as compared to everyone else.

            In addition, when a
person is upset, angry or fearful while eating, these negative emotions
stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn causes decreased
secretion of hydrochloric acid. This causes decreased secretion of
pancreatic enzymes, which makes it harder to digest the food. Without
adequate stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes, food is not properly
digested. This may lead to bloating, gas, heartburn, indigestion and
other digestive problems.

            The excessive stress
caused by negative emotions is quite dangerous because it increases our
cortisol levels, which then suppresses the immune system. When the
immune system is suppressed, cancerous cells can begin to form and grow.
Hatred and jealousy are devastating emotions.

You Need A Plan of Action

What should be your plan of action at
the first sign of anger or bitterness? Immediately go to the person
involved and deal with it – regardless of who is at fault. You will feel
a wave of freedom sweep over you as you forgive – regardless of how the
other person responds in turn.

            Deadly emotions are just
that – deadly. You have seen how such emotions can rob you of life and
health. Take a minute to reflect on your own heart. Do you have deadly
emotions that are difficult to conquer?

The Miracle of a Merry Heart

Two of the greatest healing forces in
the world are available to you at this very moment. They are the
healing power of laughter and the restorative strength of joy. A merry
heart is your greatest weapon against deadly emotions.

The Bible affirms the healing power
of joy when it says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken
spirit saps a person’s strength” (Prov. 17:22). This scriptural truth
suggests that laughter holds as much healing power as medicine. It is
any wonder that those who laugh easily often live longer than those who
do not?

            When you laugh, powerful
chemicals called endorphins, which act much the same way as morphine,
are released in the brain. Endorphins trigger a feeling of well-being
throughout your entire body. So you see, a merry heart does really work
like medicine!

            An enormous amount of
research supports this fact. If a person is happy and at peace with
himself and his surroundings, he will have significantly fewer serious
illnesses than the unhappy person.

            In the Department of
Behavioral Medicine of the UCLA Medical School, Norman Cousins conducted
extensive research into the physical benefits of happiness. He
established the Humor Research Task Force that coordinated worldwide
clinical research on humor. The connection between stress and high blood
, muscle tension and the suppression of one’s immune system has
been understood for years. Cousin’s body of research proved
conclusively that laughter, happiness and joy are perfect antidotes for

Long ago the prophet Isaiah wrote:

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! (Isaiah 26:3)

A noted doctor once said that the
diaphragm, thorax, abdomen, heart, lungs – and even the liver – are
given a massage during a hearty laugh. That’s a good internal workout!
Instead of watching films or television dramas that drain and depress
your spirit, choose something that can put a smile on your face and feed
your healthy emotions.

I go into greater detail the power of
unconditional love, The choice of Mirth, and other powerful ways to
eliminate deadly emotions in my book
What You Don’t Know May Be Killing You.
