I am putting out a feeler ad as a FS/FT for my 1983 Austin Mini Mayfair.
Some history about the car:
The car was purchased off eBay UK in 2010, so is right-hand drive (RHD). It was imported to the US under the 25year old amnesty law, so is perfectly legal to drive on the road and currently has WI hobbyist plates. The previous owner sent pictures of the renovation he did in England where the drivers floor was replaced with new metal, and proof the car had a solid base to start a project with. The car came with a 998cc 4-cylinder engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox which I put on the dyno and it made all of 29 wheel horsepower!
Now some people might have seen some of these classic minis where they take out the engine in the front and replace it with a Honda B-series engine from an old Civic and stretch the hood/front end to accommodate. That is OK, but then you make the car front heavy and still is front wheel drive. Well, after finding a company in the UK called Zcars who specialized in modifying minis, I found the path that I was going to take. Zcars made kits where you can make your classic mini mid-engine, rear-wheel drive using either the engine from a Hayabusa or R1 crotchrocket, OR use the k20 engine from Honda/Acura. The bike engine kit has its pros and cons, but ultimately I decided on the Honda kit to use their reliable power and easy/cheap parts database. I found an engine out of a 2004 Acura RSX type S with ~60k miles and it came with the engine, 6 speed manual tranny (I installed a Spoon LSD w/upgraded clutch and lightened flywheel), ECU (replaced with Hondata k-pro), wiring harness, and gauge cluster all from the same car. I ordered the kit which included front and rear subframes, connecting bars, front and rear suspension (100% adjustable), front and rear brakes with the Wilwood front brake upgrade (10.25” 2-piece rotors with 4 piston calipers. The stock wheels on the car were 10” wheels as a reference), gas tank, and a few other goodies from Zcars, and got to work.
For the next 10 months, I spent most of my waking moments outside of working and sleeping, working on this car. No corners were cut in this project, and a lot of time, money, and effort were put in to make sure it was going to be successful and it shows with the car’s performance & reliability.
Once the car was finished being built, I had the car corner weighted and competition aligned so the car’s diagonal weight distribution is 50/50 with 60% rear and 40% front and even with doubling the engine size and putting in a roll case, the weight is still 1500lbs wet.
I had the car dyno tuned by King Motorsports where I was able to do a before and after graph with the original 998cc motor and the new 2.0L Honda power plant. 200 horsepower to the wheels which is now 7 times the horsepower the car previously had on the dyno! (0.13hp/lb which is the exact same as the C7 Corvette), and that is with a stock engine.
Due to a growing family, the car hasn’t been getting used as much as I would like to, and it seems like a shame to have it just sitting in my garage not being used. I take it out every once in a while, around town or to work, but for the most part it is just sitting there wanting to get out and I don’t have the time to play anymore.
That is the point of this ad. I want to see this car get the use it was built for; not just sit in my garage. This is your chance to own a 1 of a kind machine that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and everyone’s around you. Feel free to contact me and I can talk your ear off about everything that was done, etc., but please no low ballers as I don’t really have to sell the car. I am just looking for a better home for it. Would possibly accept trades – Viper, GTR, Porsche, M5, anything unique that you don’t see driving to work every day, but no racecars. A backseat would be a plus - as I said growing family...
All windows are available if you want to make it more of a daily driver than a trackday car.
All receipts available to show what has all been done.
Extra set of wheels & tires available too.
Pics and videos available upon request.
Looking for 30k obo.
Accepted Sportscar with backseat - something I could do an occasional trackday with but also daily if I wanted to.
