For Sale: 1961 Buick Electra
Bubble Top Trades Welcome
Here’s your chance to get a great deal on a rare 1961 Buick Electra! There were only 4250 of these 2 door hardtops produced! Why not have something more unique than an Impala! I have lost interest in the car and just want something else. I am losing a ton of money on it so my loss is your gain as they say.
Let me start by saying that I bought this 6 months ago from a guy who……well…. let’s just say he wasn’t completely truthful. He told me this car had a clean title. It has a rebuilt salvage title. You can still register the car and get plates and everything just like a clear title but the previous salvage designation is there. The car wasn’t wrecked but it was in water. Supposedly it was just over the carpets in the car but I don't know for sure. You can't tell there was water in it but I just wanted to state this because the guy who sold it to me didn’t tell me about it. He also stated that the 40,733 miles that are on the odometer are original. The title states that there is a mileage discrepancy. I do know that the odometer does not work so the actual miles are unknown. I have put a lot of money in this car over the last 6 months to get it roadworthy. It still needs some TLC but it starts right up and runs and drives now. It floats down the road like you would expect from a big Buick!
The two-tone Dublin Green Iridescent, Sun Valley Cream body on the car is solid. That being said, there are some areas of filler that appear to be from dents. A strong magnet sticks in these areas but a fridge magnet doesn't. Whoever did these repairs painted over them with a rattle-can. Some minor body work and a paint job would do wonders for this car. The doors and trunk open and close really nice. The doors don’t sag at all. Solid! The rear bumper is newly chromed. The front is faded and could stand to be chrome plated to match the rear. One of the bullets on the front bumper has a small dent in it. The window trim is in good shape. The trim on the side is in pretty good shape with a minor dent here and there. I have the left front and rear wheel well moldings that are in good shape. The right front one is missing and the right rear one has a pretty good dent in it. The right rocker molding is missing. Handles and other chrome have some pitting. There is minor corrosion starting here and there but this is no rust bucket. The floors and trunk are beautiful. All of the glass is clear with no cracks. All windows and vent wings open and close as they should. All exterior lamps function except for one low beam headlamp and a front turn signal bulb. I will try to get these replaced before the car sells. There is a new hood insulation pad that comes with the car.
The wheels are in sad shape. It's a shame to see Wildcat wheels look this bad. The tires have good tread but they are older and have some cracking so I would not go driving cross country on them.
The interior is in decent shape. The rear seat, headliner and hat shelf could use some cleaning. The door panels and rear side panels are nice. The front seat needs to be reupholstered. The dash and steering wheel look nice. The dash could use some cleaning. The floors were completely cleaned and new carpet was installed. All of the interior lights work properly except the trunk light which is not hooked up. The ignition switch and tumbler have been replaced with NOS parts. The speedometer works but the odometer does not. The fuel gauge wasn’t functioning when I got the car. I had the shop work on the sender unit but I haven’t been able to see how accurate it is. The radio does not work, nor do the wipers. The heat is also inoperable. It has been bypassed. The clock works sometimes and looks so cool in that pod on the dash! There is a used pair of seat belts that come with the car.
The engine is a 401 “Wildcat” Nailhead rated at 445 ft. lbs. of torque and 325 horsepower. The transmission is a 2 speed Dynaflow. They both perform wonderfully and were said to be overhauled at some time. I have no documentation. They don’t leak on my garage floor and don’t smoke. It has power steering and power brakes. Both work great. The rear end has been rebuilt with all new bearings and seals throughout. The front has all new bearings and seals as well. The brake system has been gone through. The booster and master have been replaced. New brake hoses up front. It has a new thermostat and coolant in it. I have only had the chance to drive it around my neighborhood but it runs, shifts and stops great. The shop that did the mechanical work to it took it on a 30 mile round trip drive and said that it did really well. He did say that the hot light came on a few times but the car did not overheat so maybe it's a bad sender? I have some OEM replacement decals that go with the car for the air cleaner and core support.
I am open to trades but NOTHING NEWER THAN 1970. I prefer late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s stuff. I am not into boats or motorcycles.
