1941 Buick Special Series 40-A
Vin # 14040022
This is the Sedan family meaning 4 door. The 248 C.I. Straight 8 produces 113 b.h.p. This is the single down draft carburetor, How, I wish it was the Compound Version! 97% of this car is original, this is both awesome and a problem!
Sheet Metal: The metal is good on this car! There are a few areas of the floorboard that will need attention but nothing that is over whelming. There are a few dings but no major body damage that will need to be addressed. The paint is not original, it has been painted at some point over the years. The car was repainted the original color, I find no evidence that the jambs have ever been painted.
Trim: All the trim is present and accounted for except for one piece on the passenger side rocker, all of the rest of the ‘chrome’ is serviceable or an excellent candidate for restoration.
Glass: All the glass is accounted for, there are a few cracks in various pieces. There is some separation as well, however, the frames and mechanisms are all present and are restorable to working condition.
Interior: actually the interior is not that bad, repair a few door panels and you have an original interior. All the handles are present and in original condition, useable but needing restoration.
Engine: The motor starts and runs!! AND it sounds great! No funny sounds from this motor at all! This is the single carb set up. There is a water leak that is either coming out of the bottom of the water pump or it is a hose.
Transmission: This is a 3-speed column shift manual. All the gears work! The car moves forwards and backwards. Under its own power.
Brakes: All the stuff is there, but they do not work. Either the wheel cylinders have frozen up from sitting for 8+ years or? The brakes will need redone, replaced, or restored.
Electrical: Remember when I said that the car being this original is both awesome and a problem? Well this is the problem, the electrical is all original. The wires are the old cloth covered variety and they are in extreme disrepair! In fact the electrical scares me, it is a fire waiting to happen! BUT the good about this is you have a working example if you would like to restore this car to original. The gages are present but need restored, the generator produces amperage, the ignition system Coil, Points, Plugs, and Wires are all new. The coil is not an original style but the original is there. I bypassed the ignition switch system in order to test fire the motor. But it is all there to be put back. The light lenses are mostly disintegrated.
I know that these years of the Buick were somewhat mixed and matched because of metal shortages. This car has the normal opening back doors, instead of the signature suicide rear doors. The rear suspension is coil spring instead of leaf spring.
All in all, this is a very good car. It is good because you can go either way with it easily. I mean by either way is that you have everything here for an original restoration, in my time restoring old cars I have found that having a complete example is EXTREMLY helpful. Or you can go Street Rod. The choice is yours. Please contact us, ask a question, make us a offer!
