Builder’s League United/Wonderment Consortium is selling their ’97 Civic to those interested in continuing its screeching and apexing journey to glory. It has been in 11 Midwest races, and finished running in most of them. It even managed to win a few awards, always for appearances, never for speed or skill on the track. Our team members have succumbed to various racing challenges including marriages, home purchases, and upcoming moves to Canada, so we need to pass the car down to someone else with more free time than common sense.
The car originally had an automatic transmission, but after a year of racing with two pedals we swapped it over to a 5 speed manual to make it feel more like a racecar. The transmission was replaced last year and has only been through 1 race, so that should hold for a while longer. The car has also experienced the joys of an engine swap, and currently has a very stock, very predictable D16Y7 engine that should keep chugging along for a while as long as you don’t try to set new red-line endurance records. This set up has had us firmly planted in Class B for the entirety of our racing stint, but feel free to get ambitious and drop something bigger and scarier in the engine compartment; there’s room for it! If you want to leave it as is, take comfort knowing the engine oil has been changed after every race to further increase the duration of the engine's survival/torture.
It has a tested roll cage, which is not something many others can claim. The wannabe stunt driver was completely unscathed physically, just some ego bruising. The cage came through just fine as well, and hasn’t given us any friction with the Lemon’s judges in the 4 years of racing we’ve been through. It comes with 4 RT5 Rota wheels and 2 Enkei’s as well. The Dunlop tires are used, and could see you through another race, or could be up for replacement depending on how you like spending your money. It also has slotted disc brakes on the front with Haw DTC-10 pads that can definitely help you catch yourself when you get too ambitious going into turns.
This is a great Lemon’s car from a repair/parts availability standpoint; go to any junkyard, throw your wrench into the distance, and whatever hunk it clangs off of will likely have the part you’re looking for. It comes with some leftover nuts/bolts from the engine bay and interior being stripped of non-essentials, as well as a few junkyard parts that may find a new home in the engine bay mid-race. This deal includes a spare engine + header lovingly disassembled and rebuilt in his living room by a teammate that has apparently never heard of jigsaw puzzles. Additionally comes with 4 fuel jugs (5 gallon size) each set up for rapid-filling; a jug can be drained into the gas tank in 30 seconds or less. We’ll include an electronic copy of the 2000-page Honda repair manual that has helped midwife us through many a repair and replacement. The car is titled, so that adds an air of legitimacy to everything too.
UPDATE: new battery in the thing, starts up and runs fine. "fine". Also re-including the seat after it's journey across Chicagoland, so that is helpful for anyone just starting out.
If you are interested in taking a look at it or starting it up/taking it for a lap around our shop in Schaumburg, just let me know and we’ll sort out when.
